Yes
Completely off topic, but I signed up for a free trial of Lovefilm.com over Christmas and I'm just wondering what other people's experience of them has been.

So far, the good bits:

Great range of films;
Easy to use site;
Fantastically convenient.

The bad bits:

Seems to take 3 days to get new discs to me after they receive my returns;
Can't figure out how to not get games and Blu-ray discs to show up in my search results;

Still, I can't complain too much as I'm on a 3 month free trial courtesy of a giftcard received as a Christmas present. Something which worries me a little though is if I decide ultimately not to continue with the service when the free trial runs out, whether it's immoral to use up 3 months of a free trial then cancel. :shrug:

I got given a free trial too. I wonder if the giver gets a referral bonus or even had to pay for it? I won't be using it, but just like interest free offers etc I take the MoneySavingExpert point of view that there's no morality: they are just trying to lure you into paying for more than you would otherwise buy and playing on many people's feelings of fairness.

I myself had a free 3 month trial last year as a gift from someone but decided to knock it on the head after the trial finished because of the length of time. It took to get new films from them and when speaking to the giver found out that she did not have to pay for the trial and was a gift to her from lovefilm that she could not use but had to give to someone else who wasn't already a customer

iLovefilm bought the DVD rental business off Amazon. I've been on it for about 2 years now.

Works very well in that you select the subscription level you want (based on the number of DVD's per month you want to receive, the titles you want, the ranking of those titles (in terms of which you receive first) etc.

You receive the DVD, watch it, hand it to family and friends etc and then you/they put it back in the envelope it came in and send it back. They send you an email when they receive it back and then another one when the next title is despatched out to you. Depending on the subscription level you've signed up to, your next DVD arrives shortly afterwards.

If a title hasn't been released you can still add it to your rental list and it just gets added in earnest when it's released on DVD

Simple.....exactly the way I like it. :D

i suppose a downside to them ids you cantbe spontanious. if you want a film straight away you cant get it unless you download off them, for a limited time, i think they do that or are going to do that, and again that isnt brilliant for people who dont have a good net connection.

downloading isn't that spontaneous i have used a few different ones ipkayer 4od and freewire and they all take forever to dl up to days, but i suppose if you've got something like a virgin fibreoptic line it will be quick, i;m right out in the sticks and have an awful connection

i use to use this all the time , its fantastic i watched loads of films, it worked out at something like .42p a film :)

I get mine via tesco and it's about £1 cheaper but the same service as far as I can tell

They all go via Lovefilms warehouse so, basically, yeah its the same service :D

I too am on a 3 month free trial but I'm seriously considering staying on as a paying customer, the freedom you get with games and DVD's is fantastic :D and they're pretty quick at despatching another off your list too.

sounds like a porn site.

It certainly does.:D

Mrs G once spotted an email from them in my inbox and luckily she only thought the worst for a few seconds until I opened it.:D

It was a while ago that I dealt with them but had no problems then.

Nearing the end of my free trial now and there's no chance I'd pay for this service, it's been appalling. No fewer than 5 faulty discs in a little over 2 months and each time I complain about this their answer is "sometimes customers don't tell us if a disc doesn't play". Poor excuse, it can't be too hard to inspect them before you send them. In most cases the discs are really scratched like they've been kicking around for years.

The post lets them down too. My latests discs were posted by Lovefilm on Thurs, plenty of time for them to arrive for the weekend but no joy. Nothing so far, probably arrive on Monday :shake: But don't get me started on the Royal Mail, then I'll really get a rant on.

For 42p a disk they're not going to inspect them and the users are unlikely to bother about looking after them.

I was with Lovefilm for about 2 years. Just cancelled as most of the discs we were getting were scratched and either froze or jumped. Plus we would forget to send them back so it was time to cancel. Id rather just pop down to blockbusters for the ones i want :)

Or go to play.com as they cheap enough just to buy:D

I was with Amazon before Lovefilm too the business over.
Amazon were brilliant. Always dispatched discs from the top of the list, always got here quickly.
Lovefilm were, quite frankly rubbish.
Send a dvd back monday and it was 50/50 as to whether we would get one by the following weekend. Utter *****, plus the number of scratched or missing discs was unreal. ded a 3 months period with Tesco (As we got an offer giving us LOTS of clubcard points) - found they use lovefilm and had an equally **** service.

Now with Blockbuster, much better as they do not use them.

In the last 18 months i've had 2x 3 month trials and a 1 month trial, they keep sending them I keep using them, no moral dilemma here :D

If I was forging addresses it'd be different but it's their business model to keep sending them :shrug:

They are good, but once I canceled I got spam mail and email from them for a good few months until I sent them a strongly worded letter. The only reason why I canceled was because I didn't have enough time to watch movies to make it worth while.

Hi this sounds like it is worth trying.

Has anybody got a voucher for a three month trial that they do not want?

Stringy

I too was an Amazon customer, for around two trouble-free years. After being hoovered in to lovefilm, the quality of service went downhill very quickly. Around one in every three discs were faulty, all were usually very dirty, and one in particular had a network of cracks radiating out from the centre.

Is that where Jacqui Spliff's husband gets his vids?
