Hey everyone, well I thought I would give this a shot this year. I have been on the forum a little while now and have been looking at others 52 and 365's and I am really inspired! So I thought I would give it a go! :D

I have loved taking pictures for years, but only upgraded to a DSLR last summer and been learning more and more each day! :)

The reason that I thought I would try doing a 52 is to get myself out of my comfort zone, have themes that I have to go and look for rather than just snapping what i see and because I'm not very good at making myself have a go a PP and put them up for C&C...so here I start in my first week!

Im just uploading the pics so will have a go at posting one up later today....look forward to seeing everyone elses take on the themes each week and will comment on as many as possible! :D

So good luck to everyone else having a go at the challenge, cant wait to see the results at the end of the year.

Week 1 - Curves - Post 3
Week 2 - Poems/Poetry - Post 12
Week 3 - Chopped - Post 33
Week 4 - Street - Post 41

What I learnt?

- That i need an off camera flash - any donations greatfully recieved :D
- That ideas in my head are harder to get into picture form than I first thought.

So this is the outcome! Let me know what you all think :)

"That ideas in my head are harder to get into picture form than I first thought."
I totally understand that - I have some amazing and outlandish ideas, but achieving them is another thing altogether ;)

Is it pepper pot!? It has curves! More importantly like many others you have taken that first step, congrats ;)

Yeh thats exactly where i am!! Ive got loads of ideas but its getting them in the image the way i see them in my head and with the equipment i have available lol but i was fairly happy with this one!
Yeh its a salt grinder? if thats the right name? lol was playing about with basic kitchen wear and came up with this!! lol hope it works!! lol

I like it, spesh against the black background, how did you do that?

Know what you mean about making ideas come out on your screen, I'm pleased with my 'curves' pic but I feel I could have got more out of it

Also, while playing with some ideas, I learned it is much harder to take a pic of your own foot than I thought! If you're bored and fancy a laugh-try it!

Hey Kay Rocks, I took the pic with the salt grinder up infront of a black board and the made it even in PP.

Taking pics of your own foot sounds hard!! lol im looking forward to the next pic, but poems is quiet a hard subject!! lol

I do like the contrast between the salt grinder and the background - really helps to illuminate the curves and main point of focus.

I do know what you mean about equipment - I'm not sure if having more/better equipment will help me take better photos but it sure is a good excuse to buy! ;)

Thanks for all the comments! I just think having an off camera flash would help heaps as my onboard flash is pretty pants! lol just so eager to have one now!! oh well birthday coming up soon :D

I know what you mean - lots of stuff I would like, and it's my Birthday on Saturday but having cleared out my account buying a 17-40 I think that's my spending done for a few months!

Louise, I like that, the split of the grinder on the frame works nicely, and it's very curved. Flash has caused some issues, but I can't really offer much advice, as it's something I'm still struggling with myself.

Hey everyone, would just like to thank all of you that commented on my first picture.

Continuing on my quest to do the 52 I was really excited when my friend and I organised some time to take some maternity portraits....i've been looking forward to this for a long time and thought it would fit in with week 2 POEMS! We had a great session and took some pictures im really proud of which I will be uploading to my blog as soon as she gets her copy of the pics :D So here goes....

"As you live inside of me,
I wonder what you'll be?
Maybe a boy or maybe a girl,
I hope I made the right choice by bringing you into this world.
I can't wait to see your tiny face and,
hold you in my warm embrace.
No matter what you may be,
as I feel you move inside of me,
My love for you will be the same,
Even if I don't pick the perfect name.
I guess I'll sit here and wait
I just hope you´re not too late,
as for now I'll see you on Feb 10th."

Ok so I know theres some technical issues with this, but I loved her serene look that she had!! I really dont like the handle on the window but I dont know how to clone yet, so maybe that could be one of the lessons this week! :D (Im using gimp by the way lol)

What did I learn?

- That I desperately would like some studio equipment to play with, as this shoot was done with things around my house including black and white sheets and natural light which was a pain! lol :bang:
- That portraits is definetly my favourite part of photography so far!
- That I need to learn how to direct people better lol

Anywho take a look and let me know what you think?? :D

I think its great, I think you captured the atmosphere of the shot perfectly, I love the lighting.

Hey squawk, thank you for the lovely comment, i had such fun doing it and she was a star to work with!! i love natural lighting so much! just wish it didnt get cold so could go out all year!! lol :D

Hi Louise,

week 1 - This is a great idea, the BG really brings the curves out. I like this.
I'm certaintly no expert but I believe you can diffuse the flash by placing a white piece of paper in front of it, and desk lamps can come in handy.

week 2 - You have captured the moment extremely well, nice lighting and the poem fits this theme very nicely too.

Hi Louise,

I think the natural light actually makes this a really good picture. Might be worth investing in a little reflector if you feel you need to bounce light back onto the subject. I hear they are very cheap (I've subscribed to a magazine and there's one as a free gift). I think you should be very proud of the way this came out. I'm looking forward to week three now.

I like how well the poem fits to your picture. Good choice. I also like reading about what you learn and your thoughts about the pics. I may steal your idea if you don't mind. When we look back, we can remind ourselves of why we are doing this, and how we progressed.

Really like your poetry shot, think the expression is really nice and the lighting is just right.
I don't think you'd be able to clone the handle out very easily as the reflection and brick wall would make it hard to do a decent job, perhaps opening the window would have moved it out of shot.

Not keen on week 1's shot, but week 2 is emotional. Gets a thumbsup from me.

Thank you all so much for your comments, its really encouraging me to tackle the next week!! :D
Thankyou uniquegardens for your kinds comments it means such a great deal!
Thankyou L'cham ive been meaning to get a reflector and never got around to it, thats the mision for next month then! lol
Hey kejago yeh i thought by putting things learnt each week will help me think about my personnal development more but have to say it wasnt my idea i saw it on another 52 lol
Hi 68lbs, to be honest i was lacking inspiration for the first week as i looked at too many others before i had a go at my own, but i knew instantly what i wanted to do for this week and think it shows! lol thank you for the thumbs up :D

Ive just put a few more from the session on my blog, (im not brave enough yet to put them in people and portraits) lol so if you fancy have a look and let me know what you think....

Again thanks everyone for looking and commenting it really does help to get enthusiasm for the next week......so bring on week 3 :D

Hi Louise. I'm a big fan of natural light portraits and you've captured your friend well here. Lovely dreamy expression and pose and very sympathetic processing. It is a shame about the handle on the window, but that's nothing a bit of photoshoppery couldn't fix. Next time I'm sure you'll be sure to keep it out of frame :)

Lovely portrait shot, love her expression too, good work.

Like Lee, I'm not too keen on the curves shot

Hi Louise,

Good start to your 52.
Your first shot is definitely curved, but maybe lacking a little bit of impact.
I love week 2 though.

Very emotional shot - and your friend does have that serene, dreamy look to her.
It is a shame about the handle on the window, but it's not a major distraction from the image.

Really looking forward to seeing more from you.

Hi Louise, Loving the poetry shot, it's a really nice poem and the shot itself is lovely (except for the door handle but definitely possible to remove that in photoshop). Looking forward to seeing more from your 52, good luck !

Tommy.

Love poetry shot, you can almost see the lines of the verse going through her nind!

Week one, curves. Hmm, a bit bland - maybe a mirror image on the left also to give it a bit of interest and depth? More to play on the shape that way? You can use a sheet of paper to bounce the onboard flash you know :D

Arthur

:agree: with the poetry comments.

Very serene and fits well. Lovely shot!

Cheers, Rob

Hey everyone, again thank you all for your comments, i totally agree week 1 was bland and as you can see i was really struggling to get inspiration. I loooooove portraiture so think i put alot more effort into it! lol If only i could manage to incorporate all the themes to portraits, is that allowed? lol
Could anyone help as to what to do to get the handle out in photoshop as i dont know how :(
And also how would i bounce the onboard flash? sorry if these are silly questions, still really new to photography, sorry! lol
Again thank you so much for all your comments, its really encouraging me! :D

A lovely natural pose and great lighting, agree with the previous comments about a reflector, which would help. Not sure it's pin sharp either, but that may be to your tastes. :)

Hey everyone, I know im quite behind this week, been a busy time and I've really struggled with finding inspiration and not getting the usual shots and I think I also made the mistake of looking at lots of others and then i was completely blank!! lol So heres my take on CHOPPED....its not a great picture but i wanted to submit one so please excuse the lack of umph in the picture!! :( lol

Heres to next weeks theme street being better!! At least its got people in it so i can get a bit more enthused!! :D Thank you for looking

You weren't the only one who struggled this week !! Was it a case of "Oo, I know, logs - nope to cliched"...."Ah-ha, vegetables - arrgh Nooooo" ......<cry>. No? Well that was me last week (along with "why arent there more than 24hrs in a day?")

Anyway, to your picture. As others have said to me, you got a picture, it fits the theme, so well done. Furthermore my own observations are:
Sadly the crop is a little tight.
BUT, you obviously spent a serious amount of time slicing that apple (it is an apple isn't it?) and laying it out, so well done on taking time and putting in effort.

Hey thank you for your reply!! That is exactly how i felt and was getting seriously annoyed with myself!! lol
The crop was tight as their was mess around the edge of the picture, i did think it was too tight but when its not a photo im passionate about i do tend to rush a little :( lol
It was pear actually with a rocket, parmasan and balsamic dressing, a friend came round for dinner and this was the started lol
Again thank you for commenting, im glad it wasnt just me who struggled!! lol

As you've already said, nothing special on the photo front, Not a lot to say, other than some softer lighting would have helped a great deal, least you tried :) I too struggled to get anything done for this week. But hey! that's some some seriously neat chopping, and I'm quite tempted to try that myself, sounds delicious

Excellent image for Poem, it fits so well too

Chopped, it's very neatly chopped ;)... there's not a lot to say, it fits the theme... perhaps a lower angle, across the apple to the greenery and cheese would have worked better ?

Thank you! Yeh i know its pants and rushed....i was really tempted to use a joker but thought it was quite early on in the year too...so i think ill draw a line under this one and look forward to street :D

Louise i really like week 3s image.

The only thing i would criticise is the display of the knife and fork. Personally i would have shot further away showing more of the table and the knife and Fork flat, and then cropped it to have a a rectangular image.

Great effort though :D everyones opinion differs

Chopped... what is it? Pear? Not doing a lot for me I am afraid, so look forward to seeing this week's Street shot :)
