Hi all,
I've picked up a mint D5100 and Nikon AF-S 18-55 VRII lens for Xmas from Camera Jungle. When I tested it out, I noticed the lens is very loud when the VR is active - like a rapid clicking *Correction - Rattle*. This is the same on my D7000.
It's much louder than my other lenses, so I wonder if anyone has experience of this lens and whether this is normal? Is it just an inherently loud lens, or is it likely to be faulty?
Thanks for reading!

Is it focusing or is it not moving and making the noise! It sounds like the focus corkscrew is worn on the gearing and it’s jumping it’s thread

It seems to be focusing ok. I'll give it another test...

The technical term is fxxxxd

:D

OK so I just tried it out again, and noticed it only does it when the VR is activated and is worse with any amount of camera shake.
It does not do it when VR is switched off, or not activated.
It's focusing OK.

This might be a daft thought but recently having problems with a 70-200 vr lens. I wiped around the contact studs on both the camera and lens........problem solved, in my case it was a 'dirty' contact

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried that and did remove a bit of dirt, but still the same rattle. In fact, it is more of a rattle than a click...

You'll hear the VR click-in and click-out of activation, but while active it shouldn't "click"... it'll be more of a "hum." The VR mechanism will rattle around if it's not "parked" when the camera is turned off, i.e. the power is turned off while VR is active.

Thanks. There is no rattle except when the VR is active and camera is on. I think I'm going to return it...

I sent the lens back to Camera Jungle and they phoned me. "Yeah they all make that noise, it's the VR system working. It's not faulty" she said. I suggested no other lens I've ever used sounded like that, so she agreed to send a replacement. Sure enough, the replacement sounds much more like I would expect, so there was definitely something wrong with it!

They are correct in a way.
There is a rattle from the 55 - 200 when the VR is off (there's meant to be). I've never heard of it happening with the standard lens though.
