Yes
My mates just rang me on his wife's phone saying he's lost his iphone 5. He thinks he put it on the car roof and drove off. Its just given me a wake up call to check what I've got on my galaxy 3. At the moment ive got 'where's my droid' installed and a quick check has shown it locates via gps and sends coordinates to the phone o.k. I'm just wondering what precautions other people take. At the moment I don't have a lock screen but might consider it now....
If there's any way to track an iphone without having a lost app installed my mate would also be very grateful lol

There is a system built in

If he had it turned on on his phone he should be able to locate it using the iCloud service HERE

Might have been helpful if you had said that in your first post.

He wasn't asking how he could track it now, just asking what precautions other people take.

On my S2 I use Samsung Dive, which is built in. Just need to log on to the phone with a Samsung account. You can track, lock, wipe and read various bits of info on it remotely, as well as other things. I think the S3 has this as well (not 100% sure).

Definitely best to use a PIN or password of some kind as well.

Hope he had it insured

I said that he didn't have a lost app installed. I've never had an iphone so didn't realise there's a factory one on it. He's had an idea of driving his car and seeing if the bluetooth pairs

Joe, I'll research samsung dive and put the pin lock on my phone as a precaution. Thanks. What makes his situation worse is his kid likes playing a postman pat game on it and now she can't. Her dad told her he'd lost it and her reply was " ahhhhhh, dont worry daddy, just buy another one " lol. She's only just over 2 years old but seems to have found the answer !

I know Windows phone 7&8, and iOS have locator, remote lock, remote wipe functionality out of the box. Just make sure it's turned on.

Also make sure there's some kind of pin lock with a 'wipe after X unsuccessful unlocks'...or winpho one which locks you out for 10mins+ after a certain number of failed PINs.

Why would you turn a phone off? lol

I use Do not Disturb on iOS products and Profile Scheduler on Android to put them in silent overnight/in meetings.

Why would you turn a phone off? lol

Think about it.............

The danger is if the battery runs down before you find it/realise it's missing

My mate enabled me to view him on latitude via computer. The only thing is we're not sure whether it was showing his pc on the computer or his phone. Which ever it was it wasnt his house. It was a house 30 odd metres away. My phones securitied right up now lol. I backup quite often, it'll just be the cost of a new phone if mine ever goes missing

Im gonna need to get a bigger memory card with all these new lost phone apps ive got installed ! Thanks for sharing

The thread starter said he didn't have it on, not it was on and then turned off. That was all. I get the logic of turning it off once someone has stolen it, but the owner had turned it off. :)

Just to confirm the phone was on when he lost it just hadn't enabled the lost phone thing/service. It still rings but cant have much battery life left. He reckons when his work mate turned his iphone off the phone never rang at all . um...... waiting for him to get home from work so we can have a final look. He's promised me a big mac meal if I find it and has also said he'll sing a Christmas Carol of my choice ha ha

The hair on my arms are still standing on its end.

I went to see my mate and he points out a rectangular shape on his car roof. The rest of it was dustier and you could clearly see the shape of where the phone was. I go and hide in his house while he goes knocking on his neighbours door- no success they havent seen it :dummy: With my mate driving he starts showing me all the hedges hes looked in with his dog. Im thinking at some point im gonna have to break the news to him that the phone is gone, get over it.
It seems that we're driving for miles and all the time im staring at the grass trying to register everything thats buzzing past. We must have gone 2 miles and i begin facing him to talk to him. "Keep looking you p***k" he said so again i begin staring at everything thats buzzing past. I used to play bingo when i was a kid, this reminded me of bingo yet a million times faster and no definite chance there was gonna be a prize. At this point i asked if hes already looked here "oh yeah me and the dog have been up here 3 or 4 times" Im thinking this is the time i need to tell him to forget about it. It was in a rubbery case but im finding it really difficult to see how it could have stayed on the roof that long. We then start approaching the A30 dual carriageway and he reckons this is where he thinks he's probably booted it and potentially blown off. He's driving as slow as he deemed safe which in my head was a million miles an hour- theres alot of crap on the sides of the dual carriageway from what i saw. Im sat with my face up against the glass almost getting hypnotised by all the things buzzing past me- squashed cans, crisp packets, not squashed cans bits of tyre etc etc then.............i thought i saw something similar- pressing hard against the glass and crooking my neck to the left i make out its a circular black end cap like you get on cardboard tube packaging. Like a naughty dog i unstick my face from the window and try and compose myself in the chair. Im starting to squint and screw up my face to try and get my head straight. Im thinking this must be how the contestants felt on that game show trying to remember the cuddly toy and kettle. I go back to staring at grass, some green some brown then.........all of a sudden i see a glimpse of something rectangular and black. I think my eye was drawn to a shiny circle in the rectangle so i shout "STOP" my mate says, "oh your f*****g kidding me"

I cant believe what im seeing. I find the thing face down and im shouting like a complete loon. I start carrying it back to the car and the excitement goes a little when i find the case is broke :'( I hand it over to my mate who then tells me its an after market one :p I hadn't held an iphone before so didnt realise they were so thin

When i found it it was only the cover missing from the back, this photo was an after thought but i thought it was worth a pic

The battery was on red and i'd never seen so many missed calls and messages in my life. I cant believe the only damage was a chip to the top of the phone (silver bit just above the earpiece) My mates smiling like a cheshire cat when he realises the phone still works, then he says hes a bit gutted about the chip
When we get back to his house his Mrs cant believe we found it. She's all giggly and suggests we quit our jobs and make a living out of it :)

Twas a very surreal night and not in a million years did i think we would find it. Ive asked him to take a pic of his daughter reunited with her favourite postman pat app tomorrow.
Hungry horse at the weekend and hes buying :naughty: Before i left we slid that little tiny "enable icloud tracking " button across so atleast we can narrow down the search nex.........if it ever goes missing again

Sorry for rambling, the excitement got too much and i felt i should share

Excellent News!!!!

You need to read the thread again :)

Great result! I bet he's super chuffed! :)

a few months a go when returning to the car after doing the weekly shop i get this sense that i have lost the key to the car when i arrive at the car to put the shopping in. and yes you guessed right i had lost the key!

not being able to find the spare at home my dad picks me up. sitting at home a few hours later i decide to go back to the supermarket car park in a desperate last attempt to look for the key before paying for a new one at the dealers on the monday morning.

whilst retracing my steps i find said lost key lying in the snow three hours after first losing it...... :)

Thanks guys. Just goes to show luck can be on your side.Crikey, you were lucky to find those car keys ! Recently I had to replace two door locks after losing my keys. They turned up a few months later after the sofa decided to give them up. Im gonna get on google earth tonight to see how far it travelled- still cant really believe it. Was to late to buy a euro millions ticket but ive got a lucky dip for tonight lol

That's excellent news :)

Here's a pic of her reunited with the phone

Had the mixed grill at hungry horse on Sunday. I was gonna take a pic.........but left the ruddy phone in the car - oh the irony !!

I take my role as a godparent extremely seriously and thought it only right to explain the benefits of healthy eating
