does anyone know if you can retrieve stuff off a portable hd if it is corrupt...
i am just getting a notice saying...this device is corrupt and unreadable
any help would be good

You maybe can but it is expensive! I got a quote over £300 for a 10Gb drive a few years ago! Didn't work though.

Look at www.cbldatarecovery.co.uk - The'll look at the drive and no fee if no data is recoverable.

take the drive out of the enclosure and fit it inside a computer. you might be lucky and its only the enclosure thats faulty or you may be able to get it readable long enough to extract the data.

but yeah, ALWAYS keep at least 2 copies of your data (not RAID mirrored).

neil is on to a winner

the HDD should be pretty good.
so get the USB cable adaptor or put it inside another machine and try your luck.
is it SATA or IDE?
also my old work place of sunny and purple PCworld had great data recovery stuff, reasonable price and no data, no fee, last time I looked. bespoke datarecovery hardware...not just some muppet with a cable and a screw driver as you might expect.

also if it's a big jiggered...you can try data recovery software, but it needs to be recognised first by the machine of course!

I had a portable hard drive fail, so I bought an ICY BOX enclosure and fitted the drive to it, and it worked a treat. Its often the HDD to USB interface that fails, which is not part of the hard drive, but part of the enclosure.

hey folks thanks for the help and so fast ...thanx again

And if that works, go out immediately and buy anoter to back it up.

THe hard drive WILL fail at some point. And when you least expect it!

what file system is the drive and what operating system are you using?

it is a little samsung 320hdd and am on win7 i just store it all as jpegs... i have heard it is prob the hdd to usb interface connection

The file System will generally be NTFS or FAT32.

I don't usually bother about that but i think most of mine are NTFS. the impotrant thing to do is buy another (can you tell I like to preach about backing up)? this is VERY important if you want to keep your files. Even using DVD if all you want to keep is your JPG files is beter than nothing (Buy decent quality disks though)

thanx for the help have got hold of another one of these so i can now try it on a different interface and hope it works
thanx again to all

If it is not the interface and the drive still spins up then you can possibly still retrieve the data. Yes you will be quoted hundreds of pounds but that is usually for drives with a mechanical problem. I have a licence for some commercial retrieval software which is about as good as it gets. If it isn't the interface give me a shout, the Wirral is only up the road and I may well be able to retrieve it all for you.
