"Lost" - Definate Spoilers!! BEWARE

My thoughts on the mind blowing season finale of LOST, writing this whilst listening to "Make your own kind of music", Mama Cass :) Yes I am officially sad and proud.

So, clearly, we have two entities at war with one another. The biggest question seems to be, WHO or WHAT are they? We can safely say that both are extremely powerful...and both are desperate to prove one another wrong. Whoever is proven right, I suspect, will "win the war". The prize? The end of mankind unless Jacob is proven right.

JACOB:
Touched LOCKE after the fall, appeared to "breath life back into him". He interacted with most of the main LOSTIES in some spectacular ways (Sayed's wife and the car was insane). He clearly had foreknowledge, OR could cause these events to happen, to aid in his endgame, which I believe is the protection of humanity.

JACOB'S NEMESIS:
This has GOT to be the Smoke Monster. It is also the guy who has been PRETENDING to be Jacob for god knows how long. He duped LOCKE 100% into his death, and he has been playing BEN like a fool too, almost conditioning him to carry out the eventual murder of JACOB. He can take on the appearance of dead people, and has done throughout the show, in order to manipulate someone, and as it transpired, Ben, to kill JACOB. I should also add, I think JACOB can also manipulate his own form to represent the look of others. I believe it is he, who has been talking to Hurley as his dead friends, back in the real world.

So where does the revelation of Jacob and his foe leave us? Well, it answers a hell of a lot for starters. Everything that has happened on the island, which you failed to explain in the past, can now be put down to the manipulation of two extremely important, and powerful individuals. Hurley's numbers for example, I presume, will have been given to him, via Jacob, and I suspect we may see this in Hurley's final flash back episode. Any question which has left you puzzled, and thinking "WTF?" can now be attributed to these two, either directly or indirectly.

As I said in the opening here, it only leaves me with a few questions. Who or what are they? Why is the survival of man kind or, the destruction, actually important to them? And what does Jacob need to prove? His nemesis said in the opening conversation, something along the lines of "They come, they fight. they corrupt, and they destroy - how it always ends"...Jacob replied, roughly "It only ends once, everything before is just progress".

I suspect what we will see next season, is some more flashbacks which show how Jacob got the rest of the gang to the island, and also some flashbacks to the origins of the two enemies. We will also see a war on the island, which I believe will result in a human, not sure who (have a theory below), making the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good. He will forgo his or her own life, to simply save his friends and his race of people. It will be an emotional roller-coaster, and this sacrifice will show exactly why humanity should be saved, it will show the true power of love, hope, and a willingness to sacrifice all you have, your life included, to the benefits of others. This will be how Jacob's point is proven, and it will I predict, be enough to save the world.

Who will the sacrificial lamb to the slaughter be? Well, in this latest episode, the pilot was put forward as "A potential candidate" by "the good guys". They believe he has what it takes to prove the good of humanity. For that to work, we will need a lot more of an emotional connection with the character, and as a result we can expect to see a lot more of him. I doubt though, they will go down that route. I think one of our most loved and selfless of individuals will be the one who is sacrificed. Desmond, Hurley or perhaps Sawyer or Jack. Hurley would be perfect for a tear jerking, and absolutely shocking end - he is a cuddly barrel of fun, and is the purest of the pure - he seems like he could not hurt a fly.

One last thing I want to touch on, why now. Why these guys want to war over the fate of humanity. I suspect it's because of DHARMA, and the potential shock-waves of the rapid growth in technology which will be made available as a result of the time travel discovery. This "pocket of energy" threatens to allow humanity to progress technologically at an alarming rate, one of which might have "other civilizations" asking, "Are these guys ready to join the club?". If that is the case, then these two guys represent two distant words, one of which wants earth to be destroyed, and one which wants to protect. They could in theory be from the same planet, just governing different viewpoints, but the need for the man in black to kill Jacob, suggests to me, they could be from two very different, but very powerful civilizations.

The other theory, hinted at with all the names etc - religion. This is God and the Anti Christ for example. I doubt it though, I think the producers are firmly in the "sci-fi" sphere. Not that it matters, aliens with the kind of power to wipe out your planet are ultimately gods in many ways.

Sorry for the mega rant!!! I absolutely LOVE this program :)

Scary how close you were in your guesswork.... :p
 
What happened to Lost on Friday or the SKY2 repeat on Saturday, I need my weekly fix.

I thought it was good.
But while there were some definitive things happening to certain people (ruling out certain theories and storylines), there wasn't really any progress I thought. No more answers.

Yup I was wrong.... I thought THIS was going to be the MIB / JACOB back story....turns out that's next week....apparently IT has massive reveals!!! 2 more eps to season finale! :). Can someone please bomb Mull?

So.....

The latest episode. I loved it, I loathed it. I am confused. It was fairly spectacular in the sense that we got lots of JACOB and MIB time, it was awesome in the sense that we got a (fairly half assed) explanation of how the MIB came to be....I say half assed, as I haven't a clue what that light is, and I haven't a clue what really was created when JACOB threw his twin into the light.....it's all very confusing.

What worries me? Well - I now have a million more questions - take all the questions we have about the island in this timeline, rewind a few thousand years, and plant same questions back then. We are simply not getting any answers of substance.

My hope is, there is a MAJOR answer which ties up everything perfectly, and leaves us all completely mind blown....

My worry? This latest episode is a sign of the answers yet to come....answers which lead to more questions.

I thought it was pretty epic, bit confusing and a bit sort of what I was expecting from the final episode, not this one.....I can't wait to see where it goes now.
 
My questions are :

Who is the woman?
How did she make it so they can't hurt each other?
What is the light? Is it heaven? Is it hell? Is it like a central pool of hope for all mankind?
If MIB died (and kate and jack found the body), then how is smokey still alive and did the woman's 'spell' work?
How does it tie in with MIB seeing his mother and the Locke visions?
Why has the light gone out and what's it all about.
Why can't he leave the island, and what was it he found that meant he could leave? How does that tie in with Locke having to get everyone together to leave the island.

I think it's the light that is stopping him leaving, hence he needs to kill the candidates (who are candidates for protecting the light, just like Jacob was). Candidates gone and light is unprotected meaning Jacob can leave.

The more i think about it the more i think she was the smoke monster because of her death. She was stabbed by the same 'special dagger' before she was able to say a word - the same method suggested for killing the smoke monster in Locke's body.

At the beginning when she was explaining the wickedness of men to the boys, she said, "They kill, they destroy, they corrupt." just like the smoke monster (in MIB's body) said.

If she wasn't the smoke monster how was all the damage to the village done and the well/cave they had dug filled in so quickly.

Im not sure that she was smokey mk I, i think she told jacob not to go down to the light as she knew that it would unleash the dark side, jacob killed his brother and pushed him into the water, the body went into the well which unleashed the evil, the evil taking the form of someone dead, in this case Jacobs brother. He could see his dead mother earlier as the evil can take on the look of someone dead on the island...thats why he takes the form of locke and that people can see dead relatives, its him.

I think that the woman was there for a long time before and was a witch of somesort (she chanted as she was pouring jacob his drink)and had the power to do the camp in, much like jacob can travel to see people. the evil is trapped..

thats as far as I got at the moment, just the 2 hour final episode left!

Why can't sky leave their scheduling alone. I've been watching season 6 on Sky 2 on a Saturday night as my wife watches other shows on Sky on a Friday night from 9-11, now Sky have decided to move the Saturday night Sky2 airing to 10pm Friday, straight after the Sky 1 showing. I've just found 4 parts of 5 of episode 15 on youtube, watched those and guess what no part 5. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I have no theories, I don't need them. I have watched the series for the last few years and it has helped/influenced me towards my outlook on both myself and the world in many ways. Just like now and then out of a few dozen books you read, there will be one that leaps out at you but with reservation. It doesn't demand that you look at it, or love it, it just is - and you do. Many photographs are like this, and when the final page is turned you don't have many words to tongue, just a sense of a appreciation for being privileged to have had it.

It's that sick feeling of nostalgia you get when a relationship ends, whatever it was with. Lost is going to be much the same. When it ends, I will be resolute and content with the knowledge that I can experience the journey at my leisure as many times as I like, just like picking up a well read book. I can journey through the story again, until there comes a time when I will have my own.

Just as life is, what a fantastic story.
 
Here's one theory I have. Having seen the 2nd to last episode here in the US, don't read until you have seen it:

I think Jack is going to kill locke on the island and at the same time he'll kill locke on the operating table in the other world.

The message being about fate, no matter what happens inbetween you can't escape what happens in the end.

Now that's interesting! He's now the replacement for Jacob on The Island so it's a fair bet he'll kill Locke (smokey). The problem is that in the future Jack has no recollection of the past so I can only imagine him killing Locke by accident?

I don't thin it will be by accident, I think desmond will get him to flashback to the other world and somehow he'll know he has to kill him

Here's my overall take:


I'm wondering if the ENTIRE SHOW has been grounded in a faux reality, in someones head. It would be very "wizard of oz" / "matrix" of them, but I'm too short sighted to see an alternative. Daniel Faraday's TIME TRAVEL experiments suggested that it is the MIND that time travels, not the physical body - so perhaps this mixup of timelines etc is all in someones MIND?

Anyway, it's been good - I hope they give it a satisfying ending.

Sky are now showing the final episode of Lost at 5.00am on Monday morning, so we can see it at the same time as the States :D

On another forum I'm on this is mine and a couple other people's opinions too. I feel I might be disappointed by a possible rubbish ending....

i read an article somewhere the makers said they wouldnt do this, like it was s dream or something they said it would have been a cop out, we'll see.

ill reserve judgement on how good the show has been till i see the ending. good ending means a great show. bad means i've wasted many hours of my life ............ and i want them back.

taped this morning, watched this evening. I really enjoyed it, it made a lot of sense and answered a fair few questions on the way...
 
TBH I feel I've invested 6 years of watching that for nothing. That has to be the crapest ending to a series ever! I don't want to give anything away for anyone who hasn't seen it, but seriously wtf? I didn't expect the ending to blow me away but that was laughably stupid :shake:

Perhaps I was expecting too much :shrug: It's difficult to discuss without giving the end away, although I guess this is a "spoilers beware" thread ;)

I'm just thinking it through now though, how can that ending work, considering the aeroplane flying off?

Just what I feared all along - a fantastic story with a unique plot, and superbly cast, ruined by a cobbled together ending. :shrug:

The plane could have crashed, but that doesn't matter - I think that the church scene at the end was so far in the future that all the characters present had died anyay, which the exception of Linus who said he wasn't ready.
