The wife just asked me if i fancied a tin of tomato soup , yep that will do fine I said ,she then came In and said I’ve only got this one it says plant based tomato soup , so WTF have I been eating for the last 70 + years :D:D:D What’s next meat based beef joint .. I honestly think it’s time to emigrate to mars preferably .

I know this thread is light hearted but the most common tomato soup is Heinz cream of tomato and that's got milk in it - not plant based (according to today's meaning of plant based which now appears to be vegan friendly.)

Bit like the plant based mashed potato in Asda ...

Yeah Heinz declined to put the v word on this but vegan cream of tomato is huge news to some people. I thought it tasted nice for junk food but was incredibly expensive. But apparently so is their regular soup now.

Btw plant based now means "made with no animal ingredients" while vegan means "avoiding all animal products" so you could get plant based soup in a leather mug. Don't get me started on laboratoir Garnier and their "made to a vegan recipe"..... It's a minefield.

My wife makes our tomato soup and its far better than shop-bought Cream of Tomato. Re Heinz. Yes..it's ok but Baxter's is much better but now costs £1.60 (Tesco) £1.90 (Morrisons..same at Sainsburys)) Used to be £1.25 before these latest food price rises.

How to. Very lightly fry one large onion..add one tin of Napolina chopped toms (plum toms are more expensive but just get chopped anyway.) Two tsp of Marigold Swiss Bouillon vegetable stock (it has vegan on the label..matters not). 20 mins simmer. The Bouillon is salty so taste before adding any salt. Add white pepper /black ground pepper to taste.. She sometimes adds some milk and just before serving some double cream..in a swirl . ..looks pretty :D Re any bread. Ciabbata is lovely.

Mrs Nod makes soup for herself but I'm not a huge fan - I like something a bit more substantial! Her soups are better than anything out of a can, even if they are veggie!!!
