Lorries......can anyone explain this to me......

And then they wonder why they are involved in so many crashes... 2 second rule!

Lorries should be banned from overtaking on dual carriageways unless the vehicle in front is going less than 45mph.

I believe it is illegal to do less than 45mph on M-ways, unless you are driving Honda Jazz :)

Why did I see that at least 5 times the last time I travelled the whole length of M5 and M6? I suppose I've also seen cars at 150mph, towed caravan at 80mph all on the same day too.

Just because you see it happen doesn't make it legal.

Are they breaking the law by overtaking?
I see a lot more t***s in cars than lorries.

If they're doing it in lane three of three then yes, they are.

265
The right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes

but the right hand lane of a four lane motorway isnt lane three

Had a feeling it was pedantry  so my post was a wee bit more specific :-)

and why do you find it necessary to overtake such another truck doing between 55-56mph!!!!!????????????!!!!! I honestly cannot understand

Because it's fun....
If something is going slower than you, then you over take be it in a car or lorry.
I won't overtake though if the other lorry is doing 54+ and I'll only overtake if I know I'll get past ( usually most of the time)
There are some right a******e drivers about .

You do sound lke the kind of artic driver it's fun to take your foot off the gas in front of, on a slight incline. ;)

Haha that does sound like fun

There are also ignorant coach drivers that drives in the middle lane while not really overtaking anyone. I've seen quite a few on M1 inside of M25 (the quieter parts, J2 to J4).

That would mean more government interference into your life. You don't half love big government when it suits don't you ;)

On the a14 between Northampton and m6 there is (or has been) a trial where lorries are excluded from outside lane. Works well from limited experience.

And before the railways there was the canals. Many of them could still carry freight today.

Did they overtake each other at 0.01mph difference blocking them up

Bad day at work love

Yes I had some idiot come past me , took him 3 miles , as soon as we hit the locks he was right in front of me, pointless

If I am behind a wagon and another comes up behind me, I pass the first wagon. I hate being sandwiched between two wagons, can't always be sure a a heavy laden wagon can stop in time. Not a nice thought getting squashed between two wagons.

Having been totally wiped up six years ago by a French truck driver, my least favourte place is next to one.

You definitely don't want to be the meat in a truck sandwich

A few years ago on the M6 a 44t truck crawling in heavy traffic with a car in front , truck driver wasn't paying attention and ran into the car pushing it into a truck in front where it burst into flames killing all the occupants.

I watched one of those cop shows where they were filming a truck driver chatting on a phone for miles

They pulled him up and re educated him, he got 3 points from the police, I hope when his employers saw it he lost his job

I was in my mates car a few years ago, he stopped at the give way just as a wagon decided to continue at the give way, but make a left turn. The wagon took the wing off my mates car, and pushed us out of the way with such ease, pretty scary really. I tend to keep well away from wagons now, especially wagons where the driver sits high up.

January 2006....driving home along the m20 @ around 5.30pm, I was overtaking a truck. Before I'd cleared him he pulled out into the middle lane clipping my rear passenger side.
I spun two full rotations before slamming into the left hand side concrete median and came to rest facing the wrong way in lane one.

I remember on each turn as i watched the oncoming headlights, wondering which would be the vehicle that killed me.

Still have bad dreams about it.

I always go by something I was told years ago by a trucker, if I can't see his face in the mirror then the chances are he can't see me.
You have to think blind spots, probably not as many these days

I've also seen a fair few near misses on roundabouts, even though the truck is indicating right and has to swing wide to allow
for the trailer, car drivers still try to squeeze though the gap to go straight on !!

You don't have to see the face in the mirror, just the mirror. If you can see the face you're waaaay to close

And I was along side!

Not if your along side on a motorway.
Simple answer is the driver may not have been aware you were there, no defence I know and one reason I always
keep checking when I am driving on motorways, I like to know where other vehicles are

I was alongside on the motorway. I was in lane two. Truck was French and in lane one. I'm puzzled how I could have seen his face in any mirror at 5.30pm in January. And I knew exactly where he was. Sadly my psychic asshole spotting powers failed me.

So a left hooker to boot, please note I never said it was your fault, just that he may not have seen you

And now, a light comedy break . . .

I know. I tried to find a good version but it was only available in the middle of a five minute part of the programme.

Steve.

It's not often you get 2 trucks crash head on at speed with a car between

About 5 years ago I was on the m6 following a 17T skip wagon with 2 skips full of sawdust one on top of the other

We were in traffic doing about 10mph when I heard a loud bang , the skip wagon had run into the back of an artic trailer

It'd crushed the cab trapping the driver, the skips weren't chained down so had slid forward into the back of the cab snapping the hydraulic arms off

The fire brigade had to cut him out and luckily he walked away

I couldn't believe the amount of damage a 10mph crash between 2 trucks caused

It's all about the mass and speed. A fast tennis ball can do little harm, while crawling lorries destroy everything.

Surely that is driving without due care. If u can't see the area there is no way you should assume its safe.

Defensive driving is quite a good thing, isn't it?

However, nowadays the law [and lawyers] say you should not drive defensively, or in particular ride a bicycle defensively, if, for even one instant, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO GIVE UP YOUR OVERWHELMING SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT!!

Well they need to get their money somewhere don't they ;)

Self preservation comes before any lawyers advice on things like that, I'd rather not have the accident in the first place :D
