Lorries......can anyone explain this to me......

Most of them like to take up the whole lane, I followed a group of around 12 of them and they had the whole lane blocked

I got stuck behind 2 riding side by side up a steep bendy hill earlier, and the idiot driver behind was blasting on his horn trying to make me pass them :banghead:

They're going to overtake, it's inevitable due to the inconsistency with the speed limiters and weight of cargo. You would think though, that once a lorry starts the overtaking manoeuvre, the one being overtook would back off a little to make the process quicker, or is that too easy

And don't get me started on 3.5t vans that sit behind me at 70mph on a dual carriageway waiting to pass, when they're only supposed to be doing 60mph

The problem with that is even backing off a little can take quite some distance and cost fuel getting back up to speed.

I am defending lorry drivers because generally, most are very good and professional. Yes, like everyone else, I get irate when they do this over taking thing, especially on a 2 lane carriageway, gets right on my nerves, but I also understand and appreciate that they have a job to do and just want to get on with it. The action that really gets on my chesty bits is the ones that start to pull out a lane just as your cars nose is level with their back lights and then they indicate, while you are left either having to swerve across a lane or getting some pretty heavy braking practice. I am always willing to move over a lane for a lorry, or even lift off and allow space but it helps no end if you actually give me a few seconds warning that you are going to do it!! It hasn't gone unnoticed that this is more often than not a manoeuve carried out by lorries with foreign plates, but not always.

Also meant to say...

I dont know if they are still doing it, but for a couple of years they had a stretch of the M11 where it's only 2 lanes wide, where they were running a test - basically, during the 2 rush hours, lorries on that stretch were only allowed in the inside lane, so in other words, no over taking, to see whether it eased the traffic flow at peak times. Would love to know how the results look [will look]

I don't believe it's against any specific rule to not cycle single file?

Government rules for cyclists states "never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends" I can't find the bit about them taking up a whole lane.

Rule 66 is guidance I think not covered by law? I can't get the pagetp open.

From the Highway code, but the question asked was not about the legality, but was it against a specific rule.

Just checked with my bro in law (ex cop) he says all road users are subject to the law of the road.....i.e. if they cause an accident due to negligence they can be prosecuted.....as for the lorries it is seen as driving with undo care and attention if they overtake and it takes a considerable amount of time to complete the manoeuvre.....but as he said most coos don't bother because of paperwork etc......maybe serving police officer can clarify.

I know, but some folk interpret rule as law.
Never mind. :-)

The overtaking thing is most annoying on two lane motorways.
Grrrrr.

Post before mine referred to a whole group of them blocking the road too

Gremlin was taking about 2 riding side by side :) (But yes I see about bends, i don't ride on roads)

Rule 66 covers that then.....

You should

  • keep both hands on the handlebars except when signalling or changing gear
  • keep both feet on the pedals
  • never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends
  • not ride close behind another vehicle
  • not carry anything which will affect your balance or may get tangled up with your wheels or chain
  • be considerate of other road users, particularly blind and partially sighted pedestrians. Let them know you are there when necessary, for example, by ringing your bell if you have one. It is recommended that a bell be fitted.

Covers what? I was saying that yes I see about the bends.

Although you could apply the same logic in the OP that cyclist deserve to overtake each other (albeit maybe slowly uphill) :p

I used that stretch regularly during the signposted trial and never saw it being adhered to or enforced.

They weren't overtaking, just riding side by side, didn't worry me too much only a shortish hill, but the guy behind
was getting really annoyed, no way was I risking possible injury to the cyclists if a car came the other way just to keep him happy :(

Trying to inject a bit of humour into a very ranty thread :)

So what part are you having a problem with, Neil?

Grrrrr.

How is it different to when they clog up 3/3 lanes, etc? This does happen a lot btw. That is illegal in Germany for example.

Lorries are not allowed in lane 3 here.

Why did I see that at least 5 times the last time I travelled the whole length of M5 and M6? I suppose I've also seen cars at 150mph, towed caravan at 80mph all on the same day too.

Because they are (insert appropriate word of your choice)!

I only pull out to overtake another lorry in mine when I see a car coming up in my mirror....
On a serious note if another lorry goes to overtake me I ease off the accelerator for a few seconds so he can get passed and pull back in pretty quickly, very rarely do other drivers do it for me which leaves us in a 56mph stale mate, and me cursing the other trucker.

Are they breaking the law by overtaking?
I see a lot more t***s in cars than lorries.

whilst we digress slighty those who bomb along and see the average speed camera and thinking braking will save them (a la Gatso style!))
I love it when that happens nearly pee myself laughing

I've been a member less than a week, and I'm thinking this forum is less about "talk" and more about moaning and whinging. :p

Just wondering why wagons love driving very close behind another wagon, I wonder if it's to take advantage of the slip stream ?

And then they wonder why they are involved in so many crashes... 2 second rule!

Lorries should be banned from overtaking on dual carriageways unless the vehicle in front is going less than 45mph.

Didn't see that (was on previous page and went straight to new post) :)
What & miss all the pearls of wisdom that came before :)

and why do you find it necessary to overtake such another truck doing between 55-56mph!!!!!????????????!!!!! I honestly cannot understand
