Looks like On1 have found a way to migrate your lightroom settings.

Using the 'power of AI' to recreate your edits in non-destructive, re-editable format in their software. If they're done a good job, and I suspect results will vary somewhat, then this is a remarkable step forward if you want to leave LR.

There's a bunch of other new features in their 2019 software - certainly worth a look if you're looking for image editing software. I'm still happy with LR5 as my main editor, but suspect I'll have to upgrade when camera replacement time comes around.

ON1 have definitely made a lot of progress since starting out as more or less just a filter effects programme. They appear to be seriously competing with both Lightroom and Capture One but Capture One is generally the RAW converter and editor more favoured by professionals. I have both ON1 and Capture One latest versions installed but only use ON1 as a Photoshop plug-in. Perhaps it's a matter of personal taste but I prefer the RAW conversions by Capture One for the wildlife subjects I shoot and that first step of RAW conversion is fundamental to any other post-processing work.

Something I don't like about ON1 is their very aggressive marketing when you are subscribed to their email news - I want to remain subscribed in order to be kept up to date but their incessant sales pitches for this-n-that approaches the level of becoming junk mail!

On 1 quite interests me as I am on LR5 but I don’t shoot often enough to justify a subscription. Any views on how well it works?

.... The best answer to your question is to watch a lot of the videos published online, both by users and ON1 training vids - There are plenty to choose from - Google is your fwend.

What do you want to know?
I've adopted On1 as my raw developer and no longer use Lightroom.
On1 is not without it's problems, but each new release takes a step forward.
Remember that Adobe has taken many years to refine their software to the point it's at now.
I don't need Adobe CC, since I very rarely use Photoshop, so I'd be paying for something I don't want.
On1 combines a great raw developer with the editing ability of Photoshop, so for me it replaces two programs with one, and I don't have to pay the monthly rental fee.

This video intrigued me:

An issue I'd been aware of was that sometimes adjustments could end up leaving more halos than Lightroom (which also has a problem with halos if you use the tone controls too hard). They weren't necessarily bad, but were a little more noticeable sometimes than one might wish. I'd like to think that this will be a fix for that issue, and that RAW processing will be better.

TBH the more new features I see (focus stacking, layer alignment, non-destructive layers, plus the LR migration tool) make me wonder if I might upgrade this time round instead of waiting until 2020 as I'd planned, and possibly move the LR catalogue across.

*edit* I notice it now does tethering too, with Canon and Nikon (not Sony yet).

I use ON1 regularly and prefer it to Lightroom. I've no plans to upgrade my gear for several years so after investing in ON1 2019 I'll run with its updates to this time next year and stick with that for a few years after that, all being well. Significantly less expensive for me than a hefty yearly Adobe subscription.

I've found it to be very versatile software, but multiple masking, etc, can slow down some machines. Now there's something I DO need to upgrade! :(
