Watched a pro photographer yesterday at a wedding - he was using his flash for 90% of the outside shots - switching to a body with a longer lens every now and then with no flash:thinking:

anyway that aside - on his flash was a dome - looked like a wall light type lamp shade upsidedown - any ideas what it was - I couldn't ask him I was over the other side of the road in my car - just stopped to have a look at the form :eek:

Driving home the thought dawned on me - That there may have been some nice girls there - but I was looking at the snapper with the lampshade:shrug:
:cuckoo::shake:

Sounds like a Gary Fong Lightsphere or similar type

Hi there - just googled that and yes looks very similar:thumbs:

are these any good? I am about to buy a Nikon SB600 or a 900 and was wondering what people do to soften light?

If you have a ceiling to bounce off, Stofen or similar is very good. I think the Nikon SB900 comes with one, doesn't it?

Then again, a bounce card is pretty good, often built-in, or like this www.abetterbouncecard.com

I like this one - Lumiquest Quik Bounce http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-lumiquest-quik-bounce/p1031217 Does everything pretty well including a little bit of softening when you haven't got a ceiling. It's also more efficient and doesn't waste light like the Fong squirting light behind you.

Great! something else I do not have to buy:lol: - I am looking to buy an SB900 any time now:thumbs:

Don't suppose you know anywhere selling them at a discount:D

Hey HoppyUK - Know anything about these Gary Fong Lightsphere diffusers? - They do seem very popular with the wedding snappers at the moment - saw another one at the church round the corner as I passed today! - Blimey there like buses:lol:

The Fong works like a Stofen and other similar dome-type diffusers, that cost a lot less and don't look so silly - like the diffuser cap I think you get free with an SB900. They all need a bounce surface to work with, when they are very effective; if you don't, they aren't.

Orange one is for slow-sync flash when you want to balance the colour of the flash with the yellow/orange of artifical light (tungsten bulb). Be sure to set the white balance to tungsten when you use it.

The clear one will give harder shadows to the direct fill-in part of the light.
