Hi im looking to upgrade from my D40, as good a camera it is i feel i have 'out grown' it now and would like something better.

Im looking to spend upto £600. Just looking for advice on the best camera body i can get for the money? And also if its best get new or second hand?

Thanks in advance :)

for £600 you are probably looking the d3100 if you go new, while it will be an improvement over the D40 I am not sure how much of an improvement. Although it does have 1080p video recording which is a plus :)

The other option, and probably wiser option would be to look at 2nd hand options. Not sure how much the D300 is second hand, or maybe look at slightly older cameras. I am sure someone can advise you on options.

I am suggested Nikon as that's the brand you already have, would you be willing to change brand? How much have you got invested in Nikon already?

What is it that you shoot?

Anything and everthing really!

Thanks Harvey Nikon, i have had a look at the d3100 but apparently the video recording is not very good according to the reviews.

I would prefer to stay with nikon as i have a 35mm prime and a 55-200mm lens already.

I would have thought that the d90 would tick the upgrade box nicely, and fit just in the budget, with all you existing kit being usable with it.

If you've outgrown the D40 then you need to quantify what you want to do that the D40 can't ... then look for the bodies that can.

My personal choice would be a used D90 (but I'm biased) or D300 but the decision has to be yours :)

Thanks :) i had a play with a d90 the other day in jessops, i think thats the main contender at the moment, im just unsure whether to buy brand new or used.

Have a play with a D300 and then decide. You can get decent second hand ones for not far off £600...

Then again, if you've got small hands maybe the D90 is a nicer 'fit'. Best thing is to go compare ;)
