Hey,
I've had my 400d for around 2years now and i've learnt everything I know with it.

A few months into the new year I will be thinking about upgrading the body.
I stick want to stick with Canon.
Looking for an all rounder, Portraits, Events, Still life macro mainly.

Just looking for some advice for the best body I can get for around £600.

Thanks!

I did the same last year and went for the 50D and a good second hand is in budget. same crop as your 400D and will be able to use your EF-S lenses.

Maybe a 5D mk1 would be better for what your shooting but can't coment as the crop factor is a near must for me so not tryied it. You may be able to find one within budget but your EF-S would not fit as far as I aware.

So if you have EF-S lenes you may want to stick to EF-S cameras

EF-S lenses won't go on a 5d body.

Why not look at the 60D you might get one early in the new year on an offer.

The 50D is good but lacks the ISO performance of the 40D so maybe a good minty 40D. I got one recently with grip and extra batteries with only 1030 clicks

It depends if what you're shooting and how tough you need it to be. You can get a 550d, or if you wait a short while and trade in your old kit, you might get the 60D. If you pamper your gear, then I'd go the 550d route

Other than the screen I can't see many differences between the 60d + 550d (other than price!)
Any anyone enlighten me?
Also...(still being new to all this) can someone explain other than megapixels and live view what I would be GAINING?
Thanks

I went 400d to 40d second hand.....

Love it....and only being 10mp I do not find limiting in fact it makes processing quicker and requires less storage for raw files.

I rarely print anything big so suits me grand.....

I lust of course for a 7d......but spent the extra spare cash on my lens lineup

550D tiny body, lots of little buttons.

60D bigger more solid body, better controls, well just tougher and better all round.

The 60D has a higher fps shooting, so that could swing it if that important for you.

Im currently deciding between the 550d or stumping up the extra for the 60d. To me after handling both, the 60d feels nicer, its a touch bigger and feels more substantial. Plus I could see that tilty screen just making shots where you get down low or to reach over a crowd so much easier.

Depends on your use, but keep us informed, I'm looking to purchase in a couple of months as well so would be interested to see what you decide to go for.

Also the 60d has I believe better battery life as it uses the battery found in the higher pro models, I've heard from one source its about a couple of hundred extra shots per full charge.

Yes, the 50D may have slightly higher intrinsic noise than the 40D, but the increased resolution and noise reduction software work together to produce an image at least equal to and usually better than that of the EOS 40D.

Comments like this a many on the web. Read between the spin of noise reduction software and increased resolution and you get the same answers that my mates with 50D's say. Close but no banana.

The 50D has higher noise just managed better by software. I'd prefer that the image was better in the first place.

Don't take the uff I get pee'd off by people saying the 7d is better than a 5d2, it is but only in a few places, just the same as the IQ of the 5d2 is way better than that of the 7d in certain circumstances.

Hmm some good points there. I'll have to go have a feel of both and see for myself in the new year.
I'll keep you updated if I decide to do anything Adam. (got alot of expense at the moment though)

Thanks again everyone :)

Just seen 1 fairly big difference between the 2.
The 60D has the dial on the left with a display on the top right due to the live view tilt screen.
Very nice!

Chris - believe you me the 50d has better high iso performance than the 40d. I compared the two directly before purchasing the 50d as I needed good high iso performance for various indoor sports. The 50d came out on top by a good margin after iso 800.

I had 40D and 50D. 40D was much cleaner at all settings, using RAW converted in Lightroom 3. I was near enough happy with 40D IQ but AI SERVO AF was a huge let down.

Having said that, I'd go for older 1D mark IIN or III, or try to find a good deal for 7D. Out of focus shot is not normally a great shot regardless of sensor.

Beat me to it :) Might struggle to get an N though, might be a standard MkII which doesn't make a lot of difference in real terms.

The focus on the 50d (think its the same as the 40d with a little tweak?) is more than up to the job, never had any issues with AI Servo, always been faultness even shooting indoor sport with the EF 50mm.

In fact, I never even had issues with the AI Servo on my old 400d, on the whole Canon don't have any duffers in that respect in my experience.

As far as I know the AF system is pretty much identical to the 40D. I haven't had any problems with my 40D's AI servo.

After playing with almost 5 different cameras over the past 3 months, I would say the 50D is probs the nicer camera.

I brought a 60D just so that I can something that was new... Yes I know... "Why". I wanted the swivel screen lol
