Hi, I'm currently studying studying photography @ college and have a Canon 1000d but I'm looking to upgrade as I'm interested in toying around with a bit of DSLR filming aswell to widen my perspective & skills...

I have two choices, the Canon 1100d or the 550d. I have a budget of a round £350 to buy a body only and was wondering if you guys had any opinions on what i should/could go for to achieve the best results although only this would be the first time i've tried filming so not after anything spectacular just something to do the job to a good enough standard, the type of filming i am interested in attempting is stuff like automotive meets, like going to show events & documenting the event by making a short movie with short cuts of stills & film clips with slow-mo ect/ Any ideas & help please?

Thanks,

Slater

Looks like the 1100 has a much reduced video capability compared to the 550D (and lower number of pixels).

Hi andy..thanks for getting back to me! I have seen a basic spec list of both cameras & comparisons and in all honesty, money no object i would take the 550d but i dont want to rush into it as i havent done any dslr filming before so with money if i could get a 550d body within my budget i would, but that all depends on how much they are, i would be able to strecth to £400 for the 550d body but i can find a 1100d bunble kit for that price. Although i am still unsure?? so i;m going to do my research, see what you guys have to say & make my decision that way, although having a 550d would be nice, just take a bit longer to save for.

Thanks

Slater :)

Well, you have a camera at the moment, and if you ask me, you would be taking a step sideways and half a step forwards with the 1100D, but a full step forwards with the 550D.

The 550D beats the 1100D hands down, and if you want to mess with video, you need to get the best you can for your budget. I've seen them sell on here for £350-400 so they are in your budget

Hi MJ Stebbings, I understand your point that by only getting 1100d im not improving apart from filming that isnt even 1080p whereas the 550d is and also 18mp....i really would like a500d

Ooh didnt know that, thankss will keep my eyes out for one then thanks..cheers for the help & advice, much appreciated

550d** correction, thanks :) i will keep my eyes open then as idealy i really would prefer the 550d

I think thats your best bet. There isnt enough of an improvement to make you want to change to the 1100d.

I have a 50d as main camera, but I wouldnt upgrade to the 60d as its not enough of an improvement over the 50d, however I would love a 7d

The 550D and 7D have the same sensor. The only real difference between them from the electronics viewpoint is (as far as I know) microadjust and the focusing system. Clearly the 7D has better focusing system and more rugged build together with more customisations possible through the menu system, but you should get near enough identical pics out of a 550D to the 7D.

Ah thanks for that info arad85, i didnt know that...well then, all i have to say is...watch out Dad, im coming for ya!!:D:lol:

I started out with a 550D and its a fantastic performer. The picture quality is brilliant, bright and vibrant. Well worth it if you put some good glass on it. I upgraded to a 7D for the faster AF for shooting fast moving objects but kept the 550D as a second body. Had the 100-400 L on my 7D and my 100 L macro on the 550D.
I then gave the 550D to my wife when I came into some money and got a 5DMkII and kept the 7D as a complimentary body. I decided not to sell the 550D though as I still hold it in such high regard. I wouldn't hesitate using it again (if I can pry it off the mrs) if I had a problem with either of mine.

Hi Slater

I'd agree with the above posts, of the 2 bodies you're looking at I'd go for the 550D, unless you can stretch another £50 - £75 and then I'd probably go for the 600D.

My dad has a 7d although he doesnt let me use it :( but it is a very good camera & he also has the 100-400 L which is an extremely good lens of which i've had the honour to use 3/4 times only

:canon: Cheers guys,

Slater :canon:

Have you looked at Canons eBay outlet, they had some 550d kits going cheap last week.

Hi Slater2101, I can see you're not too far away from me as I'm in Branston near Lincoln. Once we get past Christmas if you want to contact me regarding a visit you can have a look/go with the wife's 550D and my 7D and 5DMkII if it would be any help. I started off last Christmas with the 550D, but I was left some money in a will so decided to have a splurge and get some bits and bobs. PM me if you can make it, you'd be welcome to visit.
