Hi all,

Ive got a DSLR but am looking to try out film :) Looking for a Minolta MD mount, as the lenses are cheap, and can be adapted easily enough to my sony if i want to...

Any specific models to look for?

Many thanks,
Angus

I have an XE-1 which I think is excellent. All the models which start with X are good as are the SRT 101 models.

Actually, I don't think there are any which are bad!

Steve.

Minolta made a number of superb SLR's. There are the XD and XG series which date from around the late 70s to the mid-1980s. The more recent ones were the X-300 and X-700. You won't go wrong with either of them.

Many thanks :) Now i just need to work out how you turn film into a picture :p

Whats wrong with a scanner :p ? Ill worry about getting a negative first!

I never used Minolta cameras so I can't say anything.

About the scanner I realized that slide filme get more quality then negative after scanned. But it the ideia is to store or show on web, you can get really good pictures in both kind of films.

I'd go for a X300 or X700 as Carl suggests both quite nice ot handle and fairly reliable

Indeed the X-700 is a nice camera, but I would go for Canon FD system, plenty of excellent FD lenses at still reasonable prices and more choice of other make lenses.................also nice cameras from FTB, A or T series from about £10 to £80.

A dream combo:-

Canon T90 with 50mm f1.4, 24mm f2.8 + extras for £117

Iif you have a sony dslr and you want to share lenses with a film camera then you need Minolta AF mount. This means that the film camera will have to be a more modern one with auto focus (but you will be able to use on manual) I have a 505 si. They are cheap on ebay at the moment. This camera is extremely versatile and extra light weight.

Thanks all :) Im not wanting to share my lenses, the MD lenses are cheap, and i can easily get a converter to fit them to my cam if i really want too :) Hows abouts a Minolta XG-A?

Or is an X300 worth the extra £10?

I pretty sure the Minolta XG-A is auto only, that is, aperture priority with no manual option of setting your own shutter speeds. You can only override by 2 stops over/under. So I would definitely go for the X-300. As well as being a more recent model, it will offer aperture priority and full manual control. Personally, I would never have a camera which was auto only.

Looks like your right, you can set it manually but no meter..... Looks like its the X300 :D

erm well plan B for anyone wanting to try film:- get a Nikon L35ad P&S from a boot sale for £2, film from Ebay from 40p-£2 and get the film developed at Tesco with CD for £2......there you go 36 shots all for about £6 with excellent results (well if everything goes ok).

Grrrrrrrrrrr, just missed a X500 with 6 lenses, a flash and a teleconvertor for £25 :(

.....so

this is where you hide when you're not up to your armpits in salt !!

Indeed :D PFKs offline anyway ATM, and look like it will be for a wile, apparently a cracker got in and nicked everyone's password and email :( Got a 50mm F1.7 lens, and found some Jessops diamond 2 everyday 400 film in a draw :D

good news about the 50mm f1.7
I saw the camera on Wiki - sharp...

i just bought a 35mm 1.8 AF-S here for the Nikon D40 - guess the cat will go hungry for a while.......

any clue when PFK will be up?

Dunno, depends who they pay to fix the security, could be a few days, but probably not until after Christmas... They'll get in trouble for loosing people data :( Mind you, its impossible to build a completely cracker proof system if its connected to the web!

Bloody camera wont turn on :(
