Yes
I'm mostly going to be doing weddings, gig and some promotional stuff.

I was looking along the lines of the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, does anyone use this lens, any feedback or recommendations for anything else?

Cheers

Dave

i think a lot of wedding guys use the 24-70 f2.8, especially useful inside the church.

Yep, or the 85mm 1.2 for reason stated by Zaphod. Obviously, the 24-70 is more versatile, but I guess it depends on how many bodies you have

Yeah, the wider aperture would also be good for low light in venues as well.

To my mind the super high ISO performance of the new 5D would be a bigger jump than one stop on the glass.

I use this lens (as a nobody mind) and the IS is incredible, hand held 1/3rd second no problems :)

Here's a shot I got with it at 105mm: http://sittingbourneSPAMerver.com/downloads/Photos/TP_Shared/IMG_1317_edited-2.jpg

I does suffer heavy vignetting at wide angle though and a fair bit of barrel/pincushion throughout it's range as well.

I think that the 24-105L has developed a fan club that's disproportionate to the quality of its output. The centre of the image is fine but the periphery can be classed as average at best...certainly on the wider end.
All this is fine for portraiture when the soft areas are lost in the bokeh but it's not going to be great if edge to edge detail is the order of the day.

The 24-70's IQ is up in the next division and is as good as it gets for a wide end zoom.

Thanks for the advice, I think the 24 - 70 would probably be the better bet.

I'd go for 17-55 f2.8 IS lens for what you want to do.

its what I used on friday there lol

as said the 24-70 is a great lens..

I received the 24-70mm today from Lenses for Hire, got a wedding next week and thought it would be the ideal chance to test it!

I've not had a chance to get a proper play with it as it's raining in sheets and I'm not long in from work, but hopefully tomorrow will bring better weather!

It's much bigger and heavier than any lens I've had before, will get used to that though!

Hopefully I'll get some images posted after the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing the results!

I think you made the right choice as I'm led to believe this is "the" wedding zoom lens.

I'd love to have this in my collection, plus the 16-35mm f2.8 II :$
