Looking to buy some filters

Hey all,

I've just got myself a new Tokina 12-24 lens, and was looking to buy some filters. This lens will obviously be my landscape lens. I have a couple of Cokin filters that I used with my 18-55 kit lens, an ND8 and a grad filter, are these usable on my new lens, or will I have that fringing problem i've heard about? Obviously if I was to use these I would need to get another ring for 77mm, will I need a new holder too, or are they all the same size?

If I can't use them then what other brands are recommended? I hear a polarizer is useful in landscapes, I see the Hoya 77mm. These seem to be screw on though, am I right in thinking you can obviously only have one screwed on at a time? Only i've just bought myself a 10 stop filter which may or may not arrive in time for my holiday, but obviously this won't be used in all my landscape shots, i'll need another 'not so extreme' filter for other shots :D But I won't be able to use that as well as a polarizer, as the 10 stop one is screw on (am I right?)
 
A Hoya 77mm Pro1 DMC Circular Polariser would be perfect for your Tokina, and then I'd suggest you have a look at the Cokin Z-Pro ND8 and the Cokin Z-Pro ND4 Grad and ND8 Grad which are large in size - perfect for a super-wide-angle lens.

You might want to get a UV filter for protection.

They're quite out of my price range though. Is it possible to use the P filters I have already on this lens as long as I buy one of the Cokin wide angle holders instead of the three slot one I have? Also, is it possible to use this as well as a screw in filter like the BW 10 stop i've bought? I hear the P series holder can go on top of screw in polarizers, can it also go on top of the screw in BW 10 stop filter?
 
I think having a standard P Series holder attached to such a wide-angle lens will result in vignetting (darkening of image corners) but, like you said, a specialised wide-angle holder should fix this. However, if price is an issue, then you can always hand-hold your ND Grads in front of the lens. A friend of mine uses this technique and it works fine for him.

Filters have threads as well so I'm sure the a filter-holder will be able to screw on top of a polarizer of B+W 10 stop filter, though, again vignetting might be problem if you have too many filters on at once.

Filters are different sizes too right? If I have the correct adapter ring and holder, but not big enough filters, I can still get vignetting? This question is probably the deciding factor, if they'll be fine in a wide angle holder then i'll go ahead and carry on with the filters I have, obviously with the new holder. If not, i'll scrap it and go for a new set like Hoya, (although I would prefer the first option as I have filters that I may as well use!)

Well anyway, i'll go ahead and buy the Cokin wide angle ring and holder. May as well make use of the filters I already have.
 
In my experience with Cokin P, and bare in mind this was on the 10-20 on Nikon crop (1.5), I got no vignetting with the wide angle holder. now obviously the wide angle holder can only fit one filter instead of 3, so you are slightly limited if the sky is more than 3 stops brighter... but it's something you could potentially bring back with masked curves layers.

If I used a screw in CPL and then placed the adapter ring into the front of the CPL, i got a tiny bit of vignetting. However this was at 10mm. As you'll be starting at 12mm, this should be less of an issue. If it is, simply zoom in a touch. Not ideal, but solves the initial problem.

EDIT: Sorry, and yes. The CPL should come with a screw thread on the front and back. back to screw into the lens front, obviously, and the one on the front to stack further setups on. these threads will be the same size. So if you have a 77mm lens thread, a 77mm CPL will fit it, and then a 77mm adapter ring for a Cokin system will fit the front of the CPL. :)
 
Hey, cheers for the help earlier :) I probably will stick with the Cokins I have, but afterward I thought, hang on, seeing as i'm only going to be able to use 1 filter anyway in the wide angle holder, my comment of 'sticking with the Cokins because I have a few filters and may as well make use of them' isn't any good :D So i'm tempted to get a new set. But then again I probably won't be using more than one most of the time. Do the Hi-Tec filters come with the filter holder - the sets I mean which look interesting, or are they screw ons? If so do they have a wide angle holder that has more than one slot, or is that the same as the Cokins, just having the one? The others like Hoya seem a little too out of my price range at the moment.
 
There is a holder kit available for the Hitech, plastic or metal and from the one bit of feed back I've had about the metal ones they seem to be pretty decent, I'm thinking of buying a whole Hitech Kit rather than Hitech Filters and Lee Holder, but was worried about how good the Holder would be but seems to be good.
 
The 'budget' Hoya range will be fine unless you're shooting into bright car headlights. I was doing strobe work the other day and couldn't get my £8 Hoya UV filter to flare what-so-ever. People exaggerate so much when it comes to stuff like this because they need to justify spending £40 on each filter.

All I would say to this advice is to do a bit of a search on the net of the effect that a cheap filter can have on an image. You will be quiet supprised. I have read threads can not remember if it was one here or another forum but the lens was questioned but was discovered it was the filter I could nor believe the difference.
 
I use P size hitechs (85mm) on a Sigma 10-20 with no problems. I bought a cheapo holder from ebay with 3 slots, and cut two off with a hacksaw. It's fine at 10mm.

Holder was £3.50 including adapter ring :)

I don't really understand why you'd ever buy more than a cheapo holder, it's really sturdy. Money to burn or want it to look nicer then fair enough.
