Theres some copies been selling on ebay around £150-180 but I'm never quite sure about them.

But I'd be interested to know why a full copy from Adobe is $699 in the states (£430) but £627.45 here. Talk about a rip off.

I'm thinking of buying my university daughter a copy. Cheapest seems to be here:

agree with you about a rip off, but those copies on ebay for £150-180 are always pirated copies there was an article about this on Adobes website, but its easier to make more money by selling something that looks legitimate (boxed with DVD) for £150 then dodgy downloads for £40

Cheers

Hugh

Do you need the extended version. The standard version, a bit cheaper, may be all you need.

While I don't argree with pirated copies it could be argued that if the pricing was fairer less people would do it. Some would say that £650 for software thats essentailly similar to paint shop pro that sells for £49 is a rip off, especially when it's the best part of £200 more here in Europe that the US.

Yes - it's worth checking if you need 'extended'.

Also if you buy the education version and later want to do commercial work, if you buy the upgrade to the next version (CS4-CS5 when it appears, or I guess an old CS3-CS4 if it's going cheap) you get a full commercial licence.

(education + upgrade) is maybe cheaper than (new full)? Not sure.

I have to agree with that - although its worth taking your time to look for legitimate and cheaper sources - I paid £330 for legitimate CS4 from adobe - the fact they were offering it 50% of a while back suggest they know how much they are taking the mickey

Will keep my eyes open for something similar, maybe the Focus on Imaging Exhibition may have some good offers.
Thanks for your help

Hi,
I've got CS4 Students edition and it comes with the extended pack.

My better half is finishing her degree as a mature student and qualified through that. Whole hing was pretty painless really. Ordered it, sent a copy of her valid students card and got the activation code from hem straight away.

Put the software on and everything ran like a dream.

I agree the full commercial pricing for it is ridiculous, but the student discount is excellent value for money.

Beware the cheap ones on ebay as I was curious and asked about why they were cheap. Although they dont advertise it a lot of them still are the student version and require you to prove it before activation.

Yup, as my wife was a full time student I got CS3 and lightroom 2 cheaply last year. Was thinking of upgrading to CS4 but need another licence so my youngest can use my CS3 (another copy on my work pc already).

Whilst I agree regards the pricing structure (rip off britain), I don't think the price really has much bearing on the number of people who use the pirated software. Lets say the reduced the price to £100 and you can still get a pirated copy on the net for nothing?! No brainer for probably 80% of users. the 20% that do buy it would not make up for the lower progfit Adobe would bget (maybe my figures aren't too accurate but the idea is the same). No matter the price, if it's available free people will abuse it.

Lower prices don't mean people won't use pirated software. Look at music. many CD's are less than a fiver nowadays, yet many people still download their music free.

whilst i agree with eos_jd if somethings available for nothing most will continue to obtain free software, but if adobe did reduce the price to a more reasonable figure like £150 i think there would be a bigger take up for it,not all ebay copies are pirates,i purchased an oem copy of elements 7.0 on ebay from a us seller with 2 activations for £37 and that wasn't a pirated copy

The thing is that it is a professional tool, much like a 1Ds or a D3, people don't complain that they are too expensive and expect Canon/Nikon to sell them cheaper (or go and steal them from their local camera shop). Like cameras there are cheaper alternatives, that as you say, do pretty much the same job, Photoshop CS4 is by no means essential, the chances are that when you get to the point of being restricted by the cheaper software you will be able to justify the cost of upgrading, just like cameras. Just because it is software doesn't mean that it is free to make, software developers need to be paid too.

£600 or £50 it will get copied and used. They may sell more but they would need to sell an awful lot more to make up the losses. I could start selling my images for £1 and sell more but I'd rather sell them at the price I choose to and make money (not that I make my whole living from Photography)

Yes it could be priced fairer and slightly cheaper but my point is it could be £50 and those that use pirated versions now would probably still do so!
