Scored a 50-500 sigma yesterday (non OS) for less than £280!! Granted the paints peeling off etc but i have been assured the optics are great!

I've been really lazy / disillusioned / depressed with anything photography related since well before Christmas and think I just need a new bit of equipment to kickstart me back into it.

Silly I know, but hey :-/

Sounds like a case of, "GAS" to me.:):)

Could well be ! There's a blinking canon 15mm fisheye on the forums this evening I would have had but for the bigma being bought yesterday!! Plus I've also just won a blinking Canon EOS 30 film camera on ebay for less than £20 inclusive!!!!!:confused:

maybe not - i used to hand hold my 170-500 without a monopod... admittedly that was only practical at 1/250 or above - but if you are shooting action sports or moving wildlife the shutter speed will probably be that high anyway.

I say used to because last year i sold the coffee grinder to someone on here and got a 150-500 OS

IMO the 150-500 is a cracking lens for the money - I've not used the 100-400 mk2 (though i didnt rate the mk1 that highly), but i'd struggle to see how they justify nearly 2k when the 150-500OS is about 700 notes - course the 200-400 f4 with built in 1.4tc is supposed to be an epic lens if you happen to have £8k handy

I'm amazed that even at 500mm on a crop sensor camera I feel myself wanting more reach. 150-600 etc... ;)

theres always the sigmonster ;)

Well it's arrived and it's not pretty but as described with lots of the paint flake common to sigmas it seems :-/

Despite it being a dull misty day I have to go out anyway on a cheap film hunt to a poundland that'll just happen to take me past Cardington Hangers so might was well test out the optics :-)

A little tip, don't stick a 'protecting' filter on it. I use the hood to protect the front element on my 150-500 OS.
I hand shoot my OS lens fine as long as keep shutter above 1/400". The OS just about copes with my shakes at just under 1 stop

Appreciated. I dont tend to use protecting filters I have to admit, but good to know!

managed this on my non OS handheld at 1/500th today

that - i took a cricket ball on the front (hood) of the original 170-500 and it was fine although the hood wasnt (btw if the bloke who bought my coffee grinder is reading, not that one - you have my second 170-500, i killed the original by rolling over a floating hide).
