Looking for Two Film Cameras

In a few months, i'm going away to Crete, for two weeks, and aswell as my digital Kit, i want to take Two Film Cameras. A Half Frame to have one 36exp Film in, Most Probably a Slow B&W(APX 25)? And some sort of Medium Format camera to shoot some landscapes with, again just one film for the two weeks.

I don't have a Massive Budget for this and i need to get a Lightmeter aswell, but that can come later.

For the half Frame i'm thinking about a Oly Trip? Something like that. But for Medium format, i've got no idea about any of the Stuff. I hear the Roliflex's are good? But most probably really expensive, I don't want a Fancy len's or anything, just a basic Medium Format and half Frame camera :)

I've recently been given a Minty T90 with 35-70 and 70-200 aswell, so all sorted on the SLR front right now! :D

Any ideas?

Trip isn't half frame, but it is good. Then Olympus Pen is half rame, but old and probably going to be too expensive for a good one.

Ahh didn't realise! So which ones are HalfFrame then?
 
Bronica ETR camera for the medium format- good small size, 645 format so you will get more shots from your 1 film and you can find complete cameras for a decent price.

I wouldn't go half frame personally, the quality loss is just too great. Perhaps grab a trip and just shoot 36 frames instead! I would also be wary of putting 25iso film in such a camera- if the weather works against you it may be that the film is just too slow. Something like acros gives great detail and the extra speed afforded by 100iso film.

What do you reckon i can get a Bronica Kit for? I had a quick look on LCE and they had some for 250ish, so i guess i could get a kit on here maybe for the 200 mark.

The reason i'm thinking about slow film is - Little/No Grain, Its gonna be Sunny as Hell :P

How do you loose the quality? If a 35mm is = 20ish MegaP's, then at 10mp per half frame, there should be plenty of scope to pull detail?

I have scanned some images from a half frame my father has (can't remember the brand but its a good one) and quite frankly the images are so small my scanner has trouble pulling anything good from them. All depends on the scanner really. I would rather take a traditional 35mm and 2 rolls of film personally. As for the weather, hopefully you will be ok. as for grain I have trouble finding it on acros developed in rodinal!

Ffordes and a few other places will have a few but expect to pay £230-£250 for one.

Then again this ETRS from ffordes looks like good value...

Won't be Dev this myself, only just started to dev, and i want to get something semi-ok from these negs'. So not risking me doing it!

That ETRS looks like a nice bit ok Kit! Good price aswell!

Film doesn't work like pixels. You cut a negative in half and the grain is now so huge compared to the image detail you're going to struggle to get anything useable. Plus half frame isnt a 2x crop, it's a 1.6x crop as it takes the photos sideways, giving you 2 portrait orientated pics in the spac of one landscape orientated regular exposure.

Kodachrome is said to have around 20Mp euibvalent data, the same does not apply to other films, certainly not normal B&W. If you really want to go down this route then the best you could do is use Adox CMS 20 - a document film like Kodak Technical Pan. That may well give you useable results if you can develop it right and have a good scanner.

erm going away in two months to shoot some landscapes with medium format gear that you haven't bought yet, not tested and never used before and just going to use one film (12-15 shots) over two weeks...doesn't seem a good idea to me.
Anyway if you insist then the ETRsi with 40 or 50mm lens is VG for landscapes, or a cheaper lens would be the standard 75mm.....
btw the "MC" lenses are slightly inferior to later lenses so adjust for lower prices.
 
Canon Demi are reasonably priced half frames if your still looking for one.

Excuse me what? If your going to be an A-hole just don't post in my thread?

Ive got 3 months to get gear, and get used to it? Sorry i forgot that you know how my head works, and how i adapt to things. I made the thread to get advice from people who know a lot more about this than i do. Not to get hated on....

Thanks Jim, It is true I do have a very nice kit I'm thinking of selling, so to keep on the right side of the mods if you are interested Simon I'll stick it up in the classifieds.

If there's one thing i've learned about film it's that you just can't even attempt to assign a megapixel value to it. It just doesn't work, it depends almost entirely on the conditions and the shot, and the developer and a huge number of factors besides that. Sure, i understand it's a rough estimate but it's not useful to anyone, quite the contrary actually.

Half frame isn't useless. I've seen some good results from it, would love to get my hands on an EE17. But you shouldn't really use it just because you want more shots. Part of the experience of using film is learning when to snap and when to let it go.
