although it's pretty difficult to be racist to a white person I'd ignore it the same way if someone was generally being offensive towards me. however if it was one word used in a joke id laugh the same way I'd laugh when I get made fun of for other things and I return the favour in kind.
 
Someone made a very good piont earlier that the internet has a lot to answer for when it comes to being 'offended'. If anyone is unlucky enough to have a Facebook account you'll see just how previlant 'mock outrage' is on there.

At the end of the day though, considering all that's been said, I stand by my point that it's only words. As long as they're not accompanied by any discriminatory action then no harm done, just get on with it.

When you think about it, when it comes to words or name calling then everyone on the planet is on a level playing field as anyone can give as good as they get. Even if there is ill feeling behind the word......it's still just a word. Shrug it off and move on.
 
Poah, neither Jock nor Weegie are derogatory or racial in general use in fact weegie in particular is a term used with pride by weegies. Referring to a person as a slope has only one possible racist connotation.
 
I read somewhere in a BBC report that JC's remark was scripted if so does that change your views?

If no harm is meant and neither the person making the remark nor the person receiving it are offended or in the least bit bothered - where, exactly, is the issue. I welcome your enlightenment.

Since childhood I've always been curious about the whole 'paki' and 'chinky' thing.....if I was in China or Pakistan and was called a Britty I'd assume it was just a little nickname for British people - I definitely wouldn't write to Ann Robinson's Chinese equivalent about it.

There's racism and there's the above - I think there's a very distinct line between the two.

In keeping with the origins of the thread though. THEY'RE JUST WORDS.

You could all try a social experiment an go to your local shop and say 'ten benson please paki' and see how many orifices your cigarettes are forced in to.

It literally beggars belief that grown up, so called intelligent people still think words like that are 'ok' and that I am somehow not allowed to be offended by them.
 
Context and usage are everything. A person of Hebrew heritage will call themselves a Jew, but there is a way to use that name like a weapon. Etc.
 
Blimey, I was born on Christmas Day, my Surname is "Jelly" and I look like the arse end of a dog. You can't insult me, It's probably a statement, and I've heard it all before too.... One of my best friends is a black guy, London through & through but of Jamaican parents, he tells me it's OK to call him the N word (he calls me it sometimes), but I just couldn't do it, it feels so wrong...
 
The world is slowly going crazy. We have a very dark skinned Zimbabwean who "works" with us.... I say that in inverted commas as by his own admission he is lazy (but good at what he does.) Everyone takes the pee about it, and he has some of the foulest stereotypical "racist jokes", which is deemmed as banter. If he can take the pee out of himself referring to skin colour, but also do the same to me - I don't have an issue with that. Obviously horses for courses but he doesn't get offended and will try to shock people.

Standard one used to be "Alex, if I give you Zim$100,000,000 can you go and get some tea bags please?" when he got back 10 mins later , due to inflation they then cost Zim$200,000,000.

but they are to some people, how do you know the guy on the bridge doesn't care about the term slope?

You're assuming my local shop is owned by people of Pakistani origin. I'm offended by that lazy, stereotypical generalisation. Who do I complain to!?!?

See how things can get out if hand if we all get 'offended' all the time.

how many of you are offended by
Whitey / Chalkie / brit / pale face/ honkey ? & i'm sure there's more,
perhaps those from ethnic backgrounds would like to enlighten us "White boys" ?
What other terms there are for us.

And how many members from ethnic backgrounds on here,
are out raged on our behalf, that some of your fellow "countrymen" (and I use that term none derogatorily )
Actually I'll rephrase that before my white arse gets jumped on,
the people from the same ethnic background.
Call us "Whatever" ?

I can't see what the problem is with people referring to your nationality in a slang term. The times I've been asked to shift my lazy taffy arse etc are to numerous to mention and it's never bothered me in the least as it's just an adjective in a sentence. Same if they call me fatty, sheep shagger, or lots of other things.
Mind you at least I'm not ginger. ;):D
 
True story, I used to work with a gay, ginger man, and he used to enjoy the banter we had. He used to call me a filthy muff chugger, and he was always the Queens sperm bank. No one was offended, because neither of us chose to take offence.

I'm with you on this POAH. If the somebody isn't bothered by a bit of banter it's nobody else's business to be offended on his behalf.

I've worked in several different parts of the world with people of many nationalities and they ALL have slang names for each other, and to their faces. I can say it's never appeared to be a problem. For an example closer to home, whenever I've been working in Scotland I've very often been "the sassenach". It's never bothered me and when I've exchanged banter with the "Sweaties", I've assumed they didn't mind that in return.

Are you actually suggesting that I should not be offended by racist language because I am white and for the most part it's not directed at me?

I am ALWAYS offended by racism/derogatory terms. I am NOT being offended on behalf of someone else. I am being offended because racism is disgusting and anyone who thinks using the terms 'paki' or 'chink' is ok are ill informed racists.

You are only offended because you can't imagine them being anything other than racist and derogatory, or have determined for yourself that they always must be so. You might find most people they have a rather different perception, both those who use and those who receive said expressions.

TBH, although I don't use the term, I thought that Pakistan was a translation of "Land of the P***" in the same way that Kurdistan is the land of the Kurds etc.. It's only the discussion above that has taught me that it was originally PAKSTAN with the I being added to make it easier to pronounce.

Is it racism to refer to us Brits as Poms or Limeys? To Americans as Yanks? To residents of the agricultural areas of Britain as Yokels?

At school, there were a pair of Nigerian brothers who were extremely proud of their tribal heritage but who had British names. At my next school, a gentleman who revelled in an extremely Nigerian name (which I shall not reveal since he's now in the public eye on occasion) was offended when I asked him (out of genuine interest) which tribe he was from there.

I'm not going to say it again because, basically, I think the horse you're on is just too high for you to be able to hear me from up there.

Words are just that, words. Actions and discrimination based on prejudice is wrong.

I don't use racist or offensive language but I'm certainly not offended by it because a) life's too short and b) they're just words.....see a pattern emerging?

There is a member on here whose name escapes me who shares fantastic images of people from the Far East. If, as part of a critique on his images somebody said 'nice image, the little chink kids make it for me', they would be rightly admonished by the mods. As it's racist.

Nobody in this thread (and the majority of the forum) will ever agree with me on this so on that note I'll leave this thread and leave you all to carry on your schoolyard racist love in.

I hope that at least few people on here see what I'm trying to say. Maybe I'm not being eloquent enough. It's fashionable to be offended. Loads of people think that they should be offended by something so therefor they are.

Let's just clear something up though - nobody here is racist. I'm disappointed you feel that way......but not offended ;)

Well because 'P*ki' is often used in a derogatory fashion, and in my experience of hearing it used, is generally aimed at people for whom they have no knowledge which country they originate from, never mind those that are British, it is just targeted at a section of society based on their skin colour.

You can't say things are just words (well you can, but I don't agree with you). You ignored my earlier post (as you have every right to :)) but words do have implications, especially when made on television where they carry to millions of people potentially.

This thread is depressing.

You don't have to be offended it by it. That does not mean that other people cannot be offended by it. What I think you are failing to see is that people can be offended by some of the terms mentioned above but you don't want to accept it's possible this could happen.

Out of interest why don't you use racist language?
 
People these days have nothing better than to take offence at other peoples insensitivities and humour.

Sad state of affairs. These people will never be happy as they'll always have an axe to grind. I find it better to pay them no attention.

Top gear is great, I love it.
