Thanks for that Garry. I did wonder how much effect the spacer effect would have on a beauty dish or that type opf reflector and that answere the unasked question. There are various ones sold on Ebay, all made by the same firm so no real choices there.
These adapters will be just about OK to fit softboxes to flash heads but because they act as a spacer they don't really work for any other kind of modfier.
Even with softboxes though, it would be better to get a different speedring, this will only be available from the softbox manufacturer, in this case the supplier will be The Flash Centre.
44cm Bowens fit beauty dishes are common enough, mines a Bowens. So I suppose my next question is where can I get a 44cm beauty dish or therabouts with a gold deflector, or is it an easy diy adapt? I dont want to buy one on the off chance.
I am going to the Photography Show Monday so I can see whats about I guess
Yeh I am after a white one but want the option of the gold deflector and so would like one where its easy to swap over. I suppose gold paint would do it, but I was thinking of sticking on some Lee Filters 'Soft Gold Reflector' onto the deflector.44cm Bowens fit beauty dishes are common enough, mines a Bowens.
A gold deflector would be an easy DIY mod, I'm painting my BD White when I get round to it, I bought a silver one before I'd realised the difference![]()
Wouldn't taping over the outside be easier?Yeh I am after a white one but want the option of the gold deflector and so would like one where its easy to swap over. I suppose gold paint would do it, but I was thinking of sticking on some Lee Filters 'Soft Gold Reflector' onto the deflector.
It would, but wouldnt it need to be on the inside too? Also swapping over on location would be awkward with tape when in a hurry, no?Wouldn't taping over the outside be easier?
I can't really see a use for a gold deflector unless matching to sunset/tungsten lighting is critical.... and it probably still wouldn't match anyway.
IMO, it is easier and better to gel it. You make a ring from a strip of gel that goes around the deflector plate. You wind up with "a sleeve" that just slips in place and folds flat for storage.
A lot easier/quicker/cheaper than full sheet gelling... but w/ increased risk of heat buildup, particularly w/ modeling lamp use (can be "vented" by leaving a gap @ the reflector dish).
