Hi,

I treated my daughter to a Canon 450D with 18-55 a while back and she does like it but doesn't use it much.

I've tried getting out of her if its the size but I think as she knows it was a big deal getting such a camera so young (she's 5) she's reluctant to say anything bad about it.

I asked her today if she'd prefer a smaller camera (like the LX7 I have) and she wasn't sure but showed some interest.

I could see her liking touch screen, face recognition and so forth and wouldn't want to spend any more than I could sell her other one for, but before going into any more detail with her I'd like to show her a specific camera rather than a load of choices - thats where you all come in - what would you recommend?

One obvious recommendation is to do nothing and see if she grows into it, but I'm also of the opinion that by the time she's older technology will have moved on so much that something the size of a SLR will not be needed.

Another thing worth noting is that I also have a son (2) and if she has her camera he'll often go for it as it looks different to the one we let him play with (a pocket camera)

Go for a Canon EOS 100D and put a 40mm f/2.8 STM on it and she'll be able to use it all day long. As with Phil though, I think 5 is a bit young for having a decent camera, my kids are 14 and nearly 12 and we only got them their Fuji bridge cameraslast xmas. Up till then they'd been using a cheap compact as it wouldn't be an expensive loss if they broke it.

I would recommend a compact camera from any of the main brands. Fully automatic.
Let her borrow yours from time to time if she is interested

Thanks guys - things are a little different now - she used to borrow mine (a 1D3 at the time), thats how come she got to have her own.

I'll do some research on the current stock of point and shoots and see what she thinks later.
