Guys, I'm looking for a supplier of simple rectangular section dark wood frames and mounts for 18x12 prints (so frame size of say 22x16 or 24x18 I guess but never heard of as a 'standard' size), I've not been asked for anything this size before so never needed to find until now. Looking for about £25-30 each max, and about 6-8off.

I've seen 18x12 as a print size, but not see frames to suit.

Thanks

two options I've found useful for strange sized frames are HobbyCraft and Wilkinsons.

Hobby craft stock most standard frame sizes however they also stock frame components, so you buy the frame, the glass and the backboard etc in the size you require. these frame components often stock non standard sizes.

Wilkinsons have surprised me a couple of times with their frame sizes, again usually just your plain simple standard frames but I've come across a couple of odd sized frames previously and their quality isn't too bad at all.

Have you considered the multicut mount frames? you know the ones where the mount has several different holes cut for various photos. They are often of strange dimensions. you could remove the mount and fit it with a mount you either have cut from your local framers or cut yourself.

Not a direct answer to your question but a couple of possible routes to consider

ikea

The ones at Ikea are a 20x16 frame with a 16x12 mount, I use them and they`re really good for the money. But as you say you would have to lose 2 inches and turn your 18x12s into 16x12s.

Surley for £25 you can get them hand made at a framers?

£25 would be really pushing it, and you would obviously have to do the assembly and mounting yourself anyway. You can get higher quality frames off the shelf at this price point than from a framers simply because mass production reduces cost massively. Nearly all the cost of custom framing at this price point is in labour. I should know, I spent months umming and ahhing over framing for an exhibition in the summer and visited multiple framers for quotes. Reckon on £30 for a decent cutom frame+mount. I have not found decent off the shelf frames for 18x12s, much to my disappointment.

He's looking for 6-8.

Your telling me a framer would be struggling to knock up 8 frames for £200-£240, shirley not?

In my experience one off frames from framers are pricey but if they can do a job lot all the same size, the cost comes down significantly.

Unless you are dead set on doing the work yourself, had you thought of getting them mounted and framed professionally? The amount of time spent making sure the glass is clean (both sides) could justify paying someone else to do it for you....

Get the Ikea mounts recut, either DIY, or ask a framers to do it.

I would try a local framers, I have just had 4 made for 18 x 12 and 2 for 30 x 20 and the cost was £250.

Exactly what I've just done  And damn good they are too ;)

£11.99 each (minus 2x £5 for taking in old books) and a pack of safe edge razor blades... still got all my fingers as well, which is a bonus :p

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

If you get a chance, can you throw up a photo of the Ikea frames? Looking for some myself and wondering whether the 60 mile trip will be worth it. Do they have a good selection of sizes and styles?
