Hi there, I'm a full time commercial photographer looking to upgrade my now-ancient five year old Canon 5D2. Got a couple of questions about what I need, as am thinking about buying a 5DSr, but am not too technically minded to know whether this is a good idea.

Bit of background:

I shoot 90% portraiture, and my two camera systems are my Canon 5D2, and a Hasselblad H4D-50 for more serious jobs. The bulk of my work is beauty headshots, along with a fair amount of full length fashion/lifestyle as well. Currently, almost all of my work is shot on my 5D2, as the Hasselblad is irritating to use even inside my studio where I have full control. I generally reserve the Hasselblad for when people specifically request it, or for when I'm shooting products.

Main reason for upgrading is I can't stand the autofocus on the 5D2, but other than that, it's an amazing camera, and I can't fault it. I'm considering a 5DSr, because it would marry perfectly, size-wise with my Hasselblad and allow me to shoot 50mp backplates in the field for when I'm shooting composite images where I'm combining landscape and studio model into a single shot.

I DO shoot a fair amount of natural light beauty/fashion, as well, and generally never go above ISO 400, as the noise becomes a problem for me.I'd LIKE to shoot more natural light work, but the ISO issue concerns me - my question is, is there ANY reason, given what you've just read that makes you think I'd be better off with a 5D Mark III instead of a 5DSr?

Many thanks in advance

Have a look at the 5Ds thread and check out the crops... The IQ is fab even with small 1:1 crops... It is targeted at the studio market. I have a 5d3 and find it fab although for other reasons I wish it had a few more frames a second but you can't have everything it seems.

Thanks for the reply Chipper, much appreciated - have done a ton of looking around at crops and stuff, and honestly, I find it hard to tell the difference between any of them. I'm very untechnically minded unless it comes to lighting - cameras I'm a complete novice with.

But essentially, you can't see a reason why I'd not get a 5DS?

Well, I have also heard that those pixies mean that there is more noise... Sorry for the delay in replying. I imagined that lots of people would have chipped in by now. The 5d3 is great. I love mine. Our club chairman has just acquired a 5DS. He is blown away by it.. I wouldn't mind trying one on a project I am working on now...could do with the ability to crop quite severely... .

HI mate. Ended up cancelling the 5DS and going for a 5DSr instead. I know I'm not going to get anything comparable to my 'Blad, but I figured if extra noise was the issue, it might as well be sharp noise!

5DsR is a good partner to your Blad, i would like to get one so to be close to my Blad too, it is really difficult to look at those DSLRs when we have digital medium format, but i know that i can't keep using Blad for everything, and i still enjoy to use DSLRs 35mm formats or mirrorless.
