Yes
I've been living in Nottingham for the last 5 years but i still struggle to find really good photography locations nearby.

I've done all the usual stuff in the city so want to start looking a bit further afield. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a top autumn location for a day trip. Would be prepared to travel upto an hour out of the city...

Subject matters of choice are landscapes, wildlife, interesting architecture etc. butn happy to broadern my repertoire

All suggestions welcome!

wollaton park might give you some nice autumn shots...if I remember it is pretty wooded and had a lake etc, other than that maybe a trip into the peak district?

yeah, i'm not too far from woolaton park, but last time i went there i wasn't particularly inspired.

I think the peaks is possibly the best bet- just wanted to avoid having to drive any more than necessary (carbon foot print and all that!)

I've never really explored Nottinghamshire and thought i might be missing out on some good spots.

One of the best things you can do is get a decent OS map of your area and look about for anything that looks interesting.

The OS people will even produce you a custom map that has any point you select (such as your house) at the centre. OS Select Maps - you can get 2 versions one at 1:25000 that covers 20km x 20km for £16.99 or one at 1:50000 that covers 40km x 40km for 15.99 but it has slightly less detail.

We aren't really spoiled for sweeping vistas in Nottinghamshire.

But you could try:
Clumber Park - Woodland, lake, interesting buildings
Rufford Park - Ditto
Newstead Abbey - Byrons gaff. As above
The Workhouse at Southwell is interesting if you like victorian architecture.
Papplewick pumping station. Architecture and engineering.
There's a nature reserve on the Trent, is it Attenborough? And a country park at Colwick although I've never been to either.
Sherwood Forest - er...forest
Welbeck Abbey - Architecture and park
You're not a million miles from Grantham and Belton House/Park.
The Vale of Belvoir
Belvoir castle
And in Newark there is a ruined castle, a small air museum and a very picturesque gypsy caravan site.

How about Hardwick Hall, an Elizebethan manor house not far off J29 of M1

Goose Fair is on this week end. That should be good for something different.

Goose fair would be an option if i could find mt tripod! Think i risk getting my camera nicked though- lots of hood rats at the fair!

I think rutland might be a good bet- my sister lives nearby so could crash there and get an early (sunrise) start

Rufford is nice- but i'm really wanting sweeping landscape vistas, rivers, flora etc.

I think there's just a lack of this sort of thing in Notts. My other half works for the wilflide trust and can't come up with any top sites for the sort of images i like to make (i've done attenborough to death!)

yup. colwick park aint bad. while your up that way, carry on out towards newark/southwell.. theres some great scenery out that way.
bea..beau...belv., that castle off the A52 towards grantham is pretty good too. high up , so a good view.
theres a vineyard just up the road too.:nono:

yup. hes right. attenbro nature reserve built a new visitors centre over the winter , on an island , complete with drawbridge. .
the entrance is thru the chilwell retail park.you can even get some shopping in while your there.or send the other half to tesco or asda while you shoot stuff.

think he's trying to say Belvoir castle ;) , i went to Newstead Abbey today, brilliant place, the Aces and assorted stuff (cercidiphyllums) are just starting to change colours. I am going to go through my shots shortly and hope i can post a couple before a mate and partner arrive later.

Would be great to see what you've managed to come up with.

Hi James
If you fancy a 20 min road trip up the A610,I could show you around some fantastic locations around Ambergate ,Cromford canal,Matlock bath, etc, etc
too many locations to point a stick at ,let alone a camera.

Shorey, that would be ace. I did go for a walk along cromford canal a few years ago, was very nice as i recall.

When are you free? i'm around on sunday...Maybe we can meet up and do an early morning session.
