Looking for alternative to alien bees, but need powerpack function

I have been looking into the Alien Bees Flashes. I am unsure of whether I want the hassle and expense of getting them shipped (esp at current exchange rate).

Is there a UK alternative to these? I need something that can be powered by a powerpack, but still run off mains, whilst giving a good amount of flash output.

I am a complete noob when it comes to studio type lights, so hopefully someone can push me in the right direction. I was also hoping to spend alien bees money.

Any one had the Bees on here and would reccomend importing or this there other options?
 
I'm sure any of the larger manufacturers have power packs available - for loads of money! ;(
 
Have you thought of the safari heads and powerpack from Lencarta, I have a pair and they are very good, also you can opt to buy an additional ringflash to add to the powerpack.

in the exact same situation - don't know if i can wait until august for the AB max's, might just go ahead and order from the states.

you can pay an extra $10 to get em running at UK current.

can't find the custom duty rates anywhere... i called customs but i need a commodity code before they can determine the rate?
 
Yeah I saw the same set Marty. I am tempted to go ahead and order from states too. Will have to pay import even if from Switzerland, so no big loss. Love the idea of being able to make a power pack for the bees for less than £50 all in though!

Haven't seen anything else in price range, and no other suggestions that tickle my fancy yet (well the Bowens Kit, but pricey).
