Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to read this.

My background in photography is film. I have a 35mm compact camera (Vivitar 35ES) and a Nikon SLR with kit lens, both of which I still use. I much prefer the Vivitar as it is smaller, less obvious and much quieter.

I have never owned a digital camera, but want to. I prefer to compose via a viewfinder rather than hold the camera at arms length to use a screen on the camera back. I tend to photograph family (including a daughter who horse rides), street, and travel/holidays, and would like to be able to isolate the subject from the background. I would much prefer a camera with direct control of shutter speed and aperture via dials rather than menus. I would print at up to A4 but no larger.

I would like my camera to be able to be carried most places I go, including in restaurants/social gatherings, so it must not be too big or be too "in your face" (as I won't carry it with me if it is.)

In my mind I am considering the Fujifilm X100T (as it is nearish in size and style to my Vivitar) or Panasonic LX100/Leica D-Lux Type 109 and as an outside chance Olympus OM10 or EP5 plus EVF (though I don't think either fit my "dials" preference). I have discounted the Fujifilm X-Pro 1 as much as I am attracted to it because it is too large.

Any thoughts on my short list, or alternative ideas. Many thanks in advance.

i like all the cameras you have listed above but for different reasons.
The X100 for its user interface and low light IQ
The LX100 for its user interface, fast lens and 4K video
The E-M10 for its style, size and portability.
The above also have some down sides.
The X100 has a fixed lens, which can be limiting.
The LX100, is not quite small enough to replace the compact, is it wort having a non interchangeable lens for its size.
The E-M10 can be a bit fiddly to use.

Everyone will have a different opinion.
So, in my opinion, the answer is always going to depend and potentially not one camera will fit 100%, a compromise may have to be had somewhere.

So you say you want a digital camera.
What do you want it for?
What are your main subjects?
What is your budget?

Just sit and consider all the elements and then make a short list of the cameras that "most" fit your requirements.
Then go and handle a few and see which you prefer. Only you can really decide but buy with your head not your heart.

Whilst its not an answer, I hope that helps.

OMD-EM5 or EM10. I think both have twin dials and EVF as well as the tilting screen and there's a reasonable range of decent primes at low cost for them.

Or you can buy my Panasonic GX7
as there is a E-M10 up in the classified thread :)

Thanks. I think - once I've got some more users opinions - it probably is the answer. Go to a shop, hold, compare & decide.
