Hi all, I don't have a flashgun at all at the moment and am considering getting one, mainly for trying some portrait and for some still life work.

I'm on a low budget though so unfortunately a 580EX is out, in fact my budgets about £50 and only because christmas is coming up.

So, as far as I can see it's either the jessops 360afd or the yongnuo 460 II the latter being cheaper it appears even on ebay.

So, does anyone see any particular advantages of one over the other at all other than price?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi donnie

The jessops flash is a good beginner flash that will work well for your needs.
The yongnuo is also a good flash but the one you have quoted is a full time manual flash (does not support ettl/ittl)

In short you can put the jessops flashing on top of your camera and it will meter for the scene automatically, the yongnuo won't.

That particular flash is best used for off camera flash unless you know how to dial in the required settings manually.

The only way you'll get a 360AFD for £50 is either secondhand, or one of the "new" ones on Ebay, which I would put money on actually being Jessops' returns, as the wholesale price on them is more than that......

@Stupar - Cheers, I hadn't spotted that!! I don't know enough yet to be dialling in stuff manually.

@Flash, aye, I probably will be buying second hand anyway due to my budget which I don't mind if it is in good condition to be honest, on saying that I have noticed jessops have dropped the new price online to £60! Might have to see if that's something I can stretch to or not.

For £60 you can't go wrong

I have got a jessops 360afd and as I'm a beginner they are good and I got mine from cex.com for £25 which is a bargain as that is the only budget flash I could find for my camera my uncle did look at the yonguo but couldn't find 1 that was compatible with my camera hope this helps

For info to OP and others, the following yongnuo flash guns support ETTL/iTTL

YN-465
YN-467
YN-468
YN-565EX

And these 3 units are internally almost identical, they're all a little underpowered really - the stated GN of 33 is nowhere near accurate, and reality is usually somewhere around 20-25 GN.

A nice, fairly powerful flash that is a much closer theoretical parallel to the Jessops model, but of course Canon-only atm (not a problem for this thread, but for others it is).

The jessops unit apparently has some 'issues' along similar lines to the older Yn-46x series models, in that there are reports of it not working on d2/d200 or older Nikon models. Again, an issue for other people wanting a flash perhaps, but not in OP's specific case.

The Jessops 360AFD is overall *probably* a better deal (given the online £60 price) than the 46x series Yongnuos, unless you specifically need the optical triggering of the 465/467/468 OR the strobe mode of the 468.
