Looking for a wedding photographer Edinburgh/Midlothian area

My daughter is getting married in July 2013, and wedding photographers are charging silly money. Can anyone recommend a wedding photographer that we could consider as long as the price is right.
 
why do you think they are charging silly money?

over £800 and not giving a disc of full res photos lol
 
I don't think 80 pictures at £10 each or 40 images at £20 each is over the top for 3 days of a photographer's life with £10k of kit. (one day shooting and 2 days editing / preparing the images / viewing, etc)
My local car franchise charges £95 per hour for servicing. 3 days at that rate works out at well over £2000 plus parts.
 
I will do your wedding ;) I will charge you an hourly rate al in, however, once we add up all the meetings, pre wedding shoot, attending the wedding, sitting till 2am whilst I secure all your precious photos before I go to bed, all the time editing, photos on website, create a preview disc, build an album then I think you will probably be happy to discuss the £1200 i normally charge, you will realise it is very worth it, good luck :)

what is the right price ?.......or how long is a piece of string
 
When the wife and I got married 3 years ago we paid £1200 for our photographer.
For that we got a pre wedding meet and photoshoot, shots taken on the day, a low res disc and boxed proof set for album selection, an Italian leather bound album containing 30 16 x 10 inch prints of our choice and a disc of all images at full res.

Money well spent we think.

Oh and our photographer was Robin frowley.

The cost of your kit is irrelevant.

The time you take to process is nonsensical.

Comparing to a car franchise is infantile.

Anything that has the wedding word in it is hiked up
beyond belief,wether that be cakes, hotels, photographers, florists or the bar bill. Weddings in this country are a complete pee take.

I have apologised for being a dick and I hope you saw that on the original thread..xx
I 100% agree with you about the premium that the wedding word seems to put on charges. My mates just been quoted £800.00 for a cake!!

Why?

If you've invested £10k in the proper gear to do a job and you're paying tax, ni, insurance, staff etc then these things need to be factored into your pricing.

Same with a garage, if you're a main dealers your overheads are going to be a wee bit more than they guy who bought a socket set with the gift voucher he got for Christmas...

I have not looked at that thread Martin, we disagreed and I so no further point in in the argument. I don`t do " Internet hate", so I just moved on, no offence intended at the time ,nor now.............:thumbs:

People post garbage shots taken with top notch gear on here, yet others post great stuff on mid range gear. 90% person,10 % gear in my opinion.

I'm quite aware that there are some awful wedding togs with high end gear, but I'll wager there are very few good ones using entry-level cameras and kit lenses and that's what you tend to get when you plunk for the cheapest quote.

how can anyone recommend the OP a photographer with the right price when he hasn't told us what the right price to him is?
 
The wedding is going to cost £15k and heading towards £18k, so looking to trim back as much as I can. As has been said, mention wedding and the cost just rockets.
I am not looking for fancy albums, just a photographer that can take good wedding pics. Some of the prices I have seen range between £1k and £2k, my budget is much lower, in the region of £600.
For example, a person I know that is a member of the local camera club, and takes very good wedding pics has offered to do it for £450. The snag is that he is working shifts on the wedding day so can't confirm availability at this stage.

I think that is the issue Jim..

The 'pro' can virtually guarantee the day not to mention any other issue that may arise during it like inclement weather, poor lighting or kit failure.

I guess like everything else you need to decide if you want to gamble on someone who might be unable/able to deal with the above or someone with the experience that comes at a cost.

Not all reasonably priced wedding togs are as bad as people think they are, in the same way that not all expensive wedding togs are as good as they think they are. :) Sure, there are some shockers out there, but I suspect the notion that all of the cheaper togs are shoddy and incapable is a myth perpetuated by those who struggle to justify their own charges. The Emperor's New Clothes? :)

As long as people apply the usual common sense approach of shopping around and checking the quality of previous work then there's no reason why someone shouldn't be able to find a perfectly good photographer offering a good service (without trying to go unnecessarily OTT for the sake of justifying the £££'s like some do ;) ) without paying over the odds.

It's like anything really - shop like a high-street punter and you pay the highest price.

It might just be me, but if I was spending that sort of money on the rest of the day I'd want the photographic memory of it to be as good as possible :shrug:
 
I'd do it for £800 and give you the disc afterwards - for that you'll get two photographers for the whole day but we would ask for food cause us weggies are greedy mofus lol

:plusone: Couldn't agree more.

When you figure in the cost of everything the photography part isn't that expensive at all considering they are normally the only person that works all day, then will spend several days processing the images etc.
 
I think for the true value is in what they receive, lasting memory's and your attention for virtually a whole day. compare that to the wedding cars for example, you will proably be in the wedding car for no more than 30mins yet your happy to pay £600 upwards for that pleasure, that £20 a minute!! lol

I never argue when someone thinks im expensive, they prove their and then they dont really respect or value the true work that I do on that day, however I do also agree there are b&g's with really tight budgets, I think most photographers these days can find a way to accomadate this.

I don't think most people take into account the time we take to edit the pictures from a wedding.

OP, you'd probably do well to ask for a photographer without ridiculing those who are beyond your budget. ;) If you'd just said, "Need a photographer for daughter's wedding, location is so-and-so, budget is £600, thanks" I don't think anyone would've taken offence.

If you haven't had any luck here, I suggest trying Gumtree. There are plenty of photographers on Gumtree who charge below your budget and a few of them seem really good.
