Hey guys!

Im looking for a nice DSLR camera with lens(es) for around the £350 mark. I dont mind if its a lot less, as long as its a decent camera! If it comes with a bag and memory and a flash, even better!

It will be used for all sorts of things, but mainly extreme sports photography (bmx and skateboarding at skateparks, so not uber high speed).

The camera i have been looking at at the moment was something i found in cash converters, but i wasnt sure about how good it was for the price (as is usually the case with this store). it was:

Nikon d40
A hotshoe flash (which i was told retails at £120)
10gb kingston micro SD
a bag
a small lens (cant remeber what it was, but it was a nikon one)

all this together was £240, and i was wondering if its a good camera and i should go for it at that price?

Thanks for any help in advance!:)

Hi Kieran, firstly :welcome: to TP

The D40 is a great first camera, but it's quite an old model now, so if you have £350 to spend then there are much newer/better ones to be had. Just £20 more will get you a brand new Nikon D3000 with the new VR lens and a wee bit more again will get you a Canon 1000D and lens. If £350 is your very top budget then the Sony A230 and lens kit might be worth a look too.

Thanks! Im only really looking to buy second hand though, im not bothered about the condition as long as it works :) Obviously just because i have that much, doesnt mean i have to spend it! Spare cash is allways nice.

Is that a good deal on the d40 or not?

I don't know Nikon, I think some earlier versions the AF will not work on some lenses or something like that. You should check the price of compatible lenses you are looking at to go with it.

Canon wise a 20D or smaller 400d would be had for your budget with your budget.

I've always thought the Sony's look good value.

Ive been looking around and i think ill get a 20d. Higer spec, and since its canon i can pinch bits of my brother (hes got a 400d).

i would search about to be honest!

i got my nikon D40 with 18-55mm kit lens for £200 from amazon and it was brand new! :)
i have had it for over a year and i want to up-grade! :)

you could also look at the entry level canon 1000d. could probably get a new one for your budget, and still borrow lenses with your brother. Not sure on the differanes between the 20d and 1000d to be honest i just base my comments on the 1000d being a much newer made camera whereas the 20d is quite old now (although may be better I dont know).

I picked up a 2nd hand Canon 20D in very good condition from ebay a few months ago for about £230, which will leave you around £100 for a used lens which should get you something reasonable to get started with, or sometimes they will come with the kit lens

I bought a second hand 20D for my first DSLR and am very happy with it. Paid around £230 for it including kit lens.

ebay, i got nikon d100, lens, bag, memory for 215 just keep looking you will find the right one

I have a 450D in the classifieds, bit more than your budget but I am open to offers  Can remove the grip to lower the price!

i agree with this lady, and i would buy new if you can afford it.

First, it make sense to go with Canon if, as you say, you know someone that has Canon kit that you can borrow.

Second, you don't need to look any further than the For Sale section on here. I am sure that you will be able to pick up a decent body and a few other bits and pieces for your budget.

I am sure that you can find this yourself.

Right now, there's a Canon 400D with 18 - 55 kit lens up for £250. Then keep an eye out for a bag. You'll get something in the £25/£35 range. Flash is up to you when you need it, but you could pick up a Jessops or other compatable for about £35. Oh, and you'll need to buy a memory card, which I think you should buy new.

So a decent 18 month old, fairly low use camera and bits pretty much within budget.

I'd suggest the D40x over the D40 if you can find one for a similar price, it's basically a D60 :)

I'd also point out before you buy (as I didn't find out until after) that the D40, D40x & D60 do not have an auto focus motor built in, you have to buy the lenses with them which costs more :(
