Hi guys. I am shooting a music video in May and the artist wants someone to shoot a behind the scenes set of the video.

Unfortunately he cannot afford to pay for this but I thought it might be an interesting project for someone getting started.

It is taking place on a weekend of May (date undecided yet) at Marsden Bay and in Newcastle. It will be a 2 day shoot, Sat and Sun.

Anyone interested?

Thanks

who's the artist?

It is an upcoming Bhangra crossover artist. The shoot should be fun, belly dancers, musicians, etc

So many people, and all giving their time for free, even a videographer!

Who'd have thought the big society could be so charitable, so quickly, to an up and coming young musician.

Please change the record folks - it gets very boring.

This could be a good opportunity for someone seeking experience and some interesting shots for a portfolio. I might do it if I was in the area. If you are not interested why bother posting?

Exactly. This is aimed at skilled amateurs, students and the like. This is a great opportunity to work on a music video shoot and basically just have a fun day shooting some pictures and watching the belly dancers

It gets just as boring for us to hear people wanting something for nothing all the time. No matter how big or small working for free damages the industry for everyone.

Please go away.

I dont see how anyone has been arrogant they have simply refused to take up your offer and give you a free lunch. I think arrogance is thinking you can get skilled photography for free. If quality is not important then just shoot it yourself.

So how did you start out in running a photography business?

Well first of all i spent loads of time shooting my own photography in my own time and leaning to use my equipment, then i worked as a photographers assistant on minimal wage and doing a lot of donkey work. During this time i shot my own work and charged as normal. Not once have i ever done a shoot for free other than portraits for my immediate family. And now my business is very successful and people dont expect me to work for free.

I am not against students assisting a paid photographer for free to gain experience but at the top end if its a job then the photographer should always be getting paid and the client should be paying.

You could just as well say that is damaging the industry as much as working for free. People often suggest seconding etc - often for no or very little pay, but for some reason that's seen as acceptable.

Photography assistant is an entry level job, i had no skills no experience and i worked my way up. Within 6 months i was promoted to a junior and worked my skills. That is how most industry work. Starting at the bottom does not mean for free

I always pay my second photographers a good day rate.

Being a second photographer and tagging along on a shoot for your own gain are very different.

If i am looking for a photographer i pay them if someone asks me if they can assist so they are learning then thats for there gain not mine.

Infact the way i see it if a student or amateur wants to come along and learn from me then i am providing them a service. This makes things very different. But yes i agree people asking for a second photographer for free is just the same.

The supermarket analogy doesn't work though, creative industries are not the same as working in a supermarket. I could explain why but it's fairly obvious.

When your artist goes to a studio to do a recording, do they ask for it for free?

When I went to music college - bands would often get free studio recording in the college studios, as we needed to do recording for our portfolio.

I worked as a volunteer for a while to get my current creative job (admittedly for a charity so a little different) - you could say I was 'damaging the industry', but for me it was gaining a vital foot in the door and lots of skills/experience.

BTW most 'upcoming' music artists earn very little if anything - I know a band who are regularly get featured in national press etc, and they earn a pittance and for quite a while got nothing at all.

How does it not work. If you want it put simpler then "you get what you pay for" will do it im sure. If you are not willing to pay for professional shots do not expect professional results. I am sure there are exceptions out there but if the results are professional then the photographer is a fool to do it for free.

My reasonings for always speaking out for how much i hate free photography and have no respect for people who do it or ask for it.

1. The result of the images is sub standard and the client gets a bad result and wastes there time ( yes as i said above i am sure sometimes the results are fine but its a big risk)

2. Its a job that could have been putting food on a photographers table.

3. It further fuels people expectation for free photography and long term the "client" will never want to pay even if the photographer turns full time pro. :bonk:

I could go on.

I would so do this if I could get there.

If this is happening after the 15th of May I am so there, just because i'm a learner myself.

Thats a bit of a analogy fail - the funding the college received to provide your education was used,in part, to pay for the facilities you needed to complete that education.

It's a far better analogy than the supermarket one - but then that would seem to better fit with your world view so obviously you wouldn't pull someone up on that.

I really don't see the point in constantly whining about the way of the world. No point rehashing this argument yet again I suppose - people just need to remember that the world doesn't owe them a living, and what other people choose to do or not do with their time is really no-one elses' business.

Nope the world owes us nothing but we should all work for a living and pay for the services we want in return.

I've done a similar shoot in the past (concert and promo shots though) but that was for expenses and 1% of all future record sales/merchandising profits. Band sunk without trace, but if they had been mega successful... ;)

Here's a simple analogy for your Grum.

If you ask for work to further your portfoio etc. = Great, you are showing some initiative and someone else will hopefully help you out, look out for you etc.

People advertising for someone to work for free to make sure they get paid = somebody taking advantage, generally known as taking the ****.

Analog, rather than ask people who are on this forum for things other than free work from others probably best if you were the one "getting lost"

P.S. Mind the door on your way out :coat:.

Seconding to an experienced photographer you could at least expect to benefit from their experience and receive useful tips, instruction and feedback to improve your own skills. There is a direct and immediate benefit to seconding. In many cases it's experience you couldn't buy.

Soloing backstage with no direction, no experienced photographer to offer guidance, whilst everyone else is getting paid - with the expectation that your shots will be made available for free to benefit someone elses career - is, as previosuly described, taking the ***s.

Expecting this to be a portfolio boost might not be all it's cracked up to be. The PR team is almost certain to expect restristions on when, where and how images are used/shared. And an inexperienced photographer is less likely to be savvy on usage licenses, so easier to exploit. Any chance of future work is very likely to be a case of jam tomorrow.

Unfortunately he cannot afford to pay for this but I thought it might be an interesting project for someone getting started.

This is just taking the pi55. Can you confirm that YOU are working for nothing?

The worst thing is people are interested and applying!

If you want experience and help, go get it, great good on you!

Just don't just wait for someone to offer a free job and expect anything other than having the pi55 taken. Those who are too lazy to chase experience, yet reply to every rip off advert for a job someone should be paid for deserve what they get really.

You can lead a horse to water and all that!

The thing is so long as there are mugs out there who will do the work for free there will be pi55 takers asking for it. The worst are the so called photographers that stick up for them.

people can work for free if they want

people can ask people to work for free if they want

I really don't understand the point of people replying to this post that show no interest in the work.

p.s although not photography I'm doing work for free at the mo

I think that threads like this would a lot better (positive) response if an offer were made to cover costs eg petrol/travel costs rather than expecting total freebies, just my thoughts of course

Wow that's a bit uncalled for.

Really the aggressive responses on this thread aren't doing anyone any favours - tbh it comes across as pretty unprofessional. I decided to stop arguing as I can see I wasn't getting anywhere, but some of you really need to take a step back and think about how you are presenting yourselves in public.

Also I'm not sure why everyone is assuming this is a full on professional shoot - it might be, it might not - like I said until you get to the really high echelons of the music industry very few people are making any kind of decent money and lots of people do stuff for free or very cheap.

It's one of the pitfalls of working in an area that some people see as a hobby/fun, and is just the way the world is.

I imagine moaning endlessly about it on here is really likely to achieve a lot....

How is that? I think it is spot on. If people are stupid enough to work for free there are always going to be pi55 takers who will take advantage of you. And that is only going to cause problems for the industry as a whole.
And while people encourage it and put up with it that makes them think it is ok.

Its not about being unprofessional at all. We are passionate about the industry and dont like to see people trying to damage it. I do not need to take a step back i am very happy with my syance on people who cause nothing but problems to an industry that would be thriving if it was not for people who do not want to pay the rates. This is a photography job, if you want to hire a photographer for any job in any sector you should pay for one.

Agreed. The you do a days work for me and get nothing in return is simply insulting to photographers as a whole.

I might not agree with Grum on the subject of the thread, but I have to agree with him that this type of language is uncalled for, unprofessional and needlessly insulting.

it is uncalled for since people can work for what they want and you have no right to tell them what they can and can't do
