Hello all,

I'm new to this board and I'm looking at getting a new lens. I already have the Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR VC Di II LD Aspherical and the Tamron AF 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical but was thinking of updating my superzoom lens to Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens. Is the Sigma one a good replacement?

I have twin girls who are 3 so don't have much time to swap lenses a lot when I take them out and on holidays etc., so that's why I like a superzoom lens and I like my other Tamron one for around home to take photos of my girls indoors etc.

Does anyone have any opinions on whether I should get the Sigma one or any other choices?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome, I would think that most people would say to steer clear of all in 1 super zooms the quality isn't very good! Your 17-50 is a good lens! I would suggest you getting a canon 55-250 which is really good way sharper than the lens you have! Not sure you would gain much with the sigma lens you have described!
If your adamant on having an all round super zoom then I'd look at the new tamron 18-270!!
I'm sure more advise will follow!!

As above really, probably the best available at the minute is the Tamron 18-270 and you can see what it's capable of here http://www.motleypixel.com/reviews/index.htm?openfolder=Tamron Primes/Tamron SP 90mm f2.8 Di Macro/ I used to have a Tamron 28-300 VC which gave me some very good results between 50mm and 250mm but went soft at both extremes specially on my first 7D.

The superzooms are pretty much ok for everyday shots but you'd want a smaller zoom range lens (3x - 5x) for more top quality shots. They do come with some top quality prices though for some of them. For the price you can get them for, the 55-250 IS is a relative steal. The IQ is better than the superzooms and so is the price.

canon 70-200mm and your 17-50 will be a nice combo. I am sure you can pick one of them to photograph your daughter, probably the 70-200 one.
The superzooms are just that - convenient, but not very good optically. Even the 28-300L is a very mediocre and incredibly heavy lens.

I have the Sigma 18-250 and have got some excellent images with it in circumstances where I either didn't want to, or couldn't, swap lenses.

Yes, there are better lenses but, as always in photography, it's a compromise between image quality, convenience and cost.

I would argue given you already have the Tamron that you will not see any real world difference between that and the Sigma. The only thing it seems to add is OS.

Have you got a prime? It took me ages to get used to the idea of not being able to zoom in/out but now I love the IQ versus the zooms. Plus having the ability to go to f1.8 gives you a lot of flexibility.

When I went on holiday I took my Tamron super zoom and my 50mm prime since I couldn't be bothered to carry a huge assortment of lenses.

Don't know what body you are on, but I have the new Nikon 18-300 and it is excellent....

Thank you for your replies. I have a Canon 550D body.

I've now been looking at the Tamron 70-300 VC as it seems to have good reviews but is it better than the Canon 55-200?! The Tamron one seems better than the Canon equivalent of 70-300. I'd like to spend under £400.

I have the 50mm prime one too but have to admit to not using it very much but I should use it more, I know!!

I would question what you think the Sigma will give you that the Tamron doesn't?

I've never used the 55-250 but it does get good reviews particularly looking at value for money. The Tamron is a little longer reaching to 300 rather than 250, is that something that's important ? I got mine for under £300, and it came with a 5yr warranty following registration of the lens with Tamron.
There are some samples here and here if you're interested, taken with my 7D/Tamron 70-300VC.
