Looking for a lens cover...

So as usually happens to me, the latest lens arrives with one or both covers missing prompting a quick look around the spares box, under the table, in the garage, etc. until you have to admit to yourself that money needs to be spent. Browsing the bay of E's earlier and came upon these little things:View attachment 3436

and thought they look pretty neat, from the 36mm I was after right up to hooooge. Being an all-round skinflint I set out to see if something cheaper could be found... which led me to these wonderful things:

... at which point I figured I had better see if anyone else used the above for bw? I am itching to try it - I assume the lens itself is pretty good being used actually on the business end of the scope and so would need to be reasonable.

So - anyone used them? If not I'm going to give the yellow one a go, for the price as a dust cap it's not bad - as a filter too it's very good!

Yes, they're rifle scope caps, colloquially known as "Butler Creeks" after what is probably the best regarded make.
The best ones, for their intended use, have a sprung release catch so that they pop open. They're "rainstorm" waterproof and keep out dust.
The cheapest ones, and you've hit on it with the yellow "filter" aren't so waterproof having a weaker seal between the "collar" part and the lens cappy part.
The yellow ones are sometimes marketed as "good for increasing contrast in snow conditions". Well if you've put one on the end of your Canon L lens and you can't see a degradation of optical quality that's up to you but would I look through one to shoot at a target in excess of 100 yards distant? Nosirreebub!
