..... that's capable of doing a resolution suitable for a 27" monitor .... preferably something that doesn't mean remortgaging the house - doesn't have to be latest top spec everything, and no bigger than 15" as it will also have to travel. Would consider used as well...... is there such a thing?

Budget £600-£700 max.....

Hmm... For 27" (I assume 2560x1440) you're going to need something with Display Port or DVI-D dual link. Don't think many of those exist (but I'm not 100% sure).... HDMI out isn't going to cut it (there appear to be very hacky ways to support "approaching" 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz, but it does appear to be pot luck). You could go for a more business-like machine (e.g. Dell Latitude) and partner it with a docking station - something like: http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsdt1&sku=452-11429

Thanks. I'm thinking 1920 x 1080 would probably be high enough resolution......

On a 27" screen? Personally, I'd prefer a 1920x1200 24" screen, which can be driven by most HDMI ports.

You can never have too much screen real-estate though (I have 2 x 1920x1200 plus a 2560 x 1440 monitors here and could still do with more!!).

Hmm, well I was thinking along the lines of anything has to be better than my 13.3" laptop! :D

Might be better just thinking about a small form factor PC as have a newish laptop anyway......
