Well i've been toying with the Idea of aking this for a while but wasn't 100% sure if it was allowed,After seeing pcp's thread i've assumed it's ok too ask.

Basically I'm 18 years old,Thanks to my stupidity and my careers guidance teachers stupidity I've missed the deadline to submit my portfolio for a 4 year photography course (BA hons degree i think),So I've decided to come over to London after my final exams and do some work experience with photographers to improve images in my portfolio and find which areas really suit me.I've got a year of free time and jobs are non existant

I'll be planning to come over in September or October as I'll be shooting quite a lot of stuff here for the summer.

When i come over I'll be living about 10 mins train ride from Wimbledon and can travel to most places in London(maybe further) to events/studios etc.

If anyone on here would be kind enough to offer to let me work alongside you for a few day(any length of time is fine though)I'd be really great full,My favorite thing to shoot is sports and I'll be widening the different types this during the summer,I quite like the idea of portraiture and have shot a family wedding.

Thanks in advance

Did you ring/write to the admissions tutor and tell them that it was down to the teacher that you missed the deadline? If you explkain to them not only about missing the deadline, but also about what you hope to do for the enforced year out, they will realise you are serious about your chosen course. Plus, they might be able to fit you in at the last minute (if the course isnt full) or shortlist you (if it is full) for any drop-outs.

Sorry cant answer the actual question you asked though :(

Yeah emailed and pleaded with them,And they replied saying they were overun with entries and won't be able to accept mine,So no good there,Portfolio have been marked now so to late,

Thanks anyway for the reply Ruth :)

oUT OF INTEREST, WHY DO YOU THINK IT NECESSARY TO DO THE COURSE AT ALL? Ooops, these buttons are hopeless and I am worse!

Why don't you take your portfolio around, get work and do the course part time with the OU? That way you will get your piece of paper and not come out after 3 years forever in debt thanks to the Government.

I'm living in Ireland,Free college here,And i feel that hopefully after a four year course in college the worlds economy should be levelling out again and hopefully they'll be some new jobs out there

Cheers for the help

Anyone else?

I'm really surprised you haven't had quite a few offers about this... c'mon guys, help the fella out!

UCAS does a thing called clearance almost up until the day people start going to uni. This is to allow people who missed the opportunity or got better grades than expected to not miss out on university. Might well be what you need to go through.

Edit: Here's the UCAS link - linky

Not sure whether the UCAS route there would be that helpful Jamie, if the course is full then there's nothing UCAS can do about it...and that's if they're any better now than 7 years ago when they ballsed 3 of my friends applications up.

clearing from ucas is made exactly for people in your situation

just because the university you wanted to apply to was full

you could easily find the same course at a different university, potentially an even better one and get a place there..

know friends that got to uni through clearance, but they got into pants uni's - might be different with photography as its less grades based and more portfolio based

I've already said though that i'm living in Ireland and the course is free over here,There isn't the same "clearance" thing here so i've got a year of free time.

Looks like I'll just be going to events and locations by myself then

im not sure if you can do so
but if u havent applied thru ucas, u should, and go thru clearing
but it wont be free, ud possibly count as international student???
not too sure to be honest

and regarding clearing
you can choose to take a place at whichever university is available
its first come, first served, so ubless you're quick, of course you're going to get into pants universities

i know of a girl who didnt get into university for whatever reason, i dont know if she was dumb or if she missed out or whatever
but she got into queen marys (top 40, i believe it used to be better) through clearing to study law (which she wanted to)
so there are success stories also lol

Do you still need the required grades for clearing?

They tend to take in on a case-by-case basis. If you don't have the best grades but a particularly impressive portfolio you'll still be in a good position. It's much more beneficial for the universities to have a full course than to have half full lecture theatres etc.

ahem, didn't twig ireland means not ucas sorry, not much I can help with but if your down my way you can come anywhere I'm going, not a pro just trying to get into it and a first year student (engineering not photography)
