Hi,

There's a few things I've got coming up this year where I'll probably need an extra shooter or two so I'm looking to compile a list of people who'd be interested.

I'm starting to get a number of enquiries about photography for larger races now and the number of runners means I'll need more shooters. It's not glam or much fun, you'll be stood for hours on end in all types of weather blatting away at hundreds of runners.

It's a paid gig - when I used to work as 2nd shooter on these I got £80 per event. I'm still at the early stages but I think I'd rather work on a percentage basis to keep things fair.

What I need to know:

Any experience of race photography you might have, example shots would be useful.

Your current kit - you'll need 8mp and ideally a 70-200 f/4 or similar plus something around the 24-70 region.

Live in the SW area (Taunton, Bristol, Wells) or be willing to travel.

Hmmm, just checked, Taunton is 350 miles away as the crow flies so that's me out!

I could be interested in this, when you say racing what do you mean? I've done a bit of BTCC shooting :)

Pete, the races are 10k, 1/2 and full marathons, etc.
 
Ah ok. Does the shooter still retain rights to use the photos or would you be holding the copyright on them?

Not trying to be funny, just figure it's always a good idea to ask these things in advance. I might be quite interested in giving this a go.

That's not being funny, it's what eveyone should be asking if they're going to be shooting for someone else, paid or not.

perhaps it's because when you've shot dozens of thousands of knackered sods finishing their race, there really isn't going to be anything you've not had already. ;)
 
You never know when you might get that "once in a lifetime" shot in amongs the thousands ;)
 
It's a sensible question. Copyright in a situation like this belongs to the employer (me) but I don't want that to sound like you lose recognition for your hard work.

For practical reasons the shooters will be using my memory cards - I need to take the shots away on the day so I can sort, tag, and get them online asap so normally the shooters don't have any photos at the end of the day. However if anyone wants to bring a backup device, laptop, etc. I'm quite happy for them to make a copy of the shots or even post them a DVD afterwards. I've no problem with the shooters using the shots on their own websites, portfolios or for any other reason. As long as the use doesn't impact on sales it's not a problem.

In other words you can have the shots and do what you like with them apart from trying to sell them.

Whenever possible credits for published shots will include the tog's name.

I hope it doesn't sound like a big business stomping over innocent togs as I want to be as fair about this as possible (which is why I want to profit share with everyone).

A good point, if that happens then that shot is yours free and clear to make the most of :thumbs:

Edit to add: The most likely shot in a case like this would be a runner stopping to throw up, I've had a few caught with it pouring our their nose :(
 
This is the world of commercial photography. You can't look at it like selling an image with a specific and restrictive copyright licence.

It's far more similar to being hired as a craftsman, like a carpenter or glass blower perhaps. Yes the work that's created is from your talent and creativity but.... in this case you have been employed specifically so that someone can take your work and then sell it at a higher rate than you are being paid. :)
 
Thanks pxl8 for your answer, as I say I was surprised it hadn't been asked sooner. BAcking up images isn't a problem, I'd just keep one of my own cards is slot b :D

dazzajl - I was expecting the terms to be more strict than pxl8 has specified, I have done a couple of jobs where I get given the memory cards, and leave them behind, I'm not allowed copies of them at all. While this is fine as you get paid, and as you rightly say this is how commercial photography works in many cases, I find you really can't learn anything from the experience without images to go back and review later.

I tend to do a lot of unpaid work, but retain copyright, which allows me to learn from the shoot, and also allows me to use the shots if I feel they're good enough.

I had exactly the same concerns when I started doing race photography. My motive for putting the offer on TP was mainly as an opportunity for people to get some experience on a commercial footing and learn from it and I'll be on hand to help with technique, etc. Being able to review the shots is a big part of the learning process and also provides a level of job satisfaction.

Two of the members (I won't name them but they can pipe up if they want) who responded are coming along for a trial run next month on a smaller race. It's a new race and is being handled slightly differently as every runner gets a free photo taken after they've finished. Epson are providing printers and the photos will be printed on the day to be taken away as part of the finishers pack.

There's no official photography of the race so the two TP'ers will be shooting that as a practice and I'll put the shots online for sale as normal. All the profits will go straight to the shooters.
 
I have worked for event photographers before.. Its always been a case of using there memory cards and handing them over... So long as I get paid well then no problem and no need to keep a copy.. The wierd thing is people having my pictures unprocessed. no cropping or any PP .. Thats soemhtign I find hard to handle :)

Pity your so far away pxl8 .. I have done a few 10ks as my wife likes running them. commercialy not much use though. last one on site has pictured viewed over 100 time each but no feedback or anything.
 
Well I was lucky in that Andy invited me to go as third shooter with him at the "Hestercombe Humdinger", and what a day it was.:eek:

I took my newly bought (second hand) Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L lens (it was the first time I used it, only received it on the Friday.) & a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 DG lens.

I will start out by saying that Andy is a cracking bloke with an equally nice family, who put me at ease straight away.:thumbs:

It was a very cold day but also nice & sunny, I took quite a few shots, & also buggered a few up!:shake:
But I thoroughly enjoyed myself, even though I ached all day Monday!
It was a lot harder than I anticipated (that lens was pretty heavy :gag:) but I'm glad I done it, in fact I can't wait until the next time!

So a big thanks to Andy @ shootingpixels.net, and also TP for getting people like me connected to people like Andy.:clap:

I just wanted to say thanks again Spence, you got some cracking shots and did a great job. I'll also offer my thanks to TP for making this kind of thing possible. I've got my thinking cap on for a way to organise some other things (not races) as the weather improves.

Finally the Grizzly is coming up in a couple of weeks. I'll be there shooting for fun so if anyone fancies coming and standing in the cold for a few hours drop me a PM.
