I currently have a Canon S5 1S which i love but i have been looking at different cameras recently and i am really liking the Nikon D60, my question is do i look at a lens attatchement for my current camera or think about a new one?

Moving to a DSLR will open up a lot more possibilities for you, if that is what you want.

D-SLR without a doubt. Then you can start collecting lenses (a bit addicting!).

I had an earlier variant to the camera you have and thought when I bought my first D-SLR I would hold onto it. In then end I dumped the S2-IS. What has become more important is a really compact camera (my personal favourite is my ixus) for the times you just can't cope with an SLR.

Do it
Do it
Do it!!!!!

Don't forget with the arrival of micro four thirds there is now the option of the compact camera with interchangeable lenses and a large sensor with image quality comparable to a DSLR. Currently expensive but if you're not in a rush check out the Panasonic gf1 with 20mm fixed lens.

Thanks for the advice :) Is the Nikon D60 a good camera? I have only ever had Canon up until now but fancy a change:thumbs:

Some years ago I had a Sony F707 and a Canon wide angle adaptor that screwed on to the lens. It was actually very good. It's not the same as a DSLR and separate lenses of course but it is a much cheaper solution and would certainly put you on for a while.

On the other hand if you're really just fancying a change, which is a perfectly valid reason too, a DSLR will open up a whole new world of photography. I suspect you might be better advised to go for a slightly better model from Nikon (something to do with auto focus on older lenses) but I don't know specific Nikon details as I use a proper camera :) ...

Seriously, the make doesn't make much difference, and there are lots of Nikon experts on here to give you good advice.

But do expect it to cost you a fortune in the long run... it always does!

cheers

Is the Nikon D60 a good camera?
Yes. But today pretty much all cameras are good.

One criticism of the Nikon D60 is that it isn't compatible with Nikon's first-generation autofocus lenses. That means that your options for new lenses are slightly limited. On the other hand, that might not be a big issue whilst you're learning how to use a DSLR.....

One thing you should do is try handling a few different models before buying. Some people find that ne manufacturer's cameras are intuitive and another's feel all wrong, but it's a very personal thing. For example I find Canons very easy to use and Nikons very difficult, but for some people it's the other way round.

Rather than looking at the cameras, look at the lenses you may want to buy. It's quite likely that you'll end up spending far more on lenses than you do on the camera body.

How do you know which lenses you may want? Well, first of all look at the photos you've taken with the S5 - especially the focal length (this program may help). Are most of them at one end or the other? That'll give you an idea as to whether you want wide-angle, mid-range, or telephoto lenses. Then you can see which maker has lenses that fit your needs, and how much they cost. Then you can start looking at cameras from those makers.
