Hi all,

I'm looking at buying my first lens!!! Very exciting!!!!!

I'm thinking of starting off with a Nifty Fifty, I've hired one out before and really enjoyed using it!

My budget isn't huge, and to be honest I will be posting in the "Wanted" section soon.

Can anyone please tell me, how much difference is there "really" between a Canon 50mm F1.8 and F1.4? can anyone supply photo samples of the same subject taken with a F1.4 & a F1.8? I know the answer is probably not, due to no one would have 2 50mm's.

Or a simple laymans explanation would be great!

So i take it this must have been a stupid question!

Can someone explain why, as I'm obviously way off somewhere!?

Maybe a little pointer and i can change things, Photography seems to be a steep learning curve!!
 
Basically you'd do well to tell them apart.
I got the Nikon f/1.4 because I was shooting some gigs, basically in the pitch black, so any extra light gathering ability is useful. The other advantage is that as lenses are softest wide open, the 1.4 is getting a little sharper at f/1.8 than the 1.8 wide open.
They'll probably look near identical at f/2.8 and beyond.

There will also be a slight difference in bokeh, but if they weren't side by side I doubt many people would be able to tell which you used.
 
Main difference between the 50 1.8 and 50 1.4 is IQ wise, they are virtually the same. Bokeh is slightly better on the 1.4 but the main thing which causes the price increase is the USM, build and slightly larger aperture.

It wasn't a stupid question.

For my first lens i thought this.. 'What can't this lens do which i want it to do?'

From that, i then decided on my first lens. For me, it was a 70-200, but that's because i was lacking reach.

The 50mm f1.8, is however, a great lens, and at a great price. I'm only going off canon here, as it;s what i have, but the f1.8, is great, lightweight, optically brilliant (In relation to the price) but feels like it'll fall apart when using it, it's a bit plasticy... The f1.4 50mm is a better lens, in terms of build, and speed, but it's about 3x the cost.

Really helpfull!!! Maybe as my budget isn't great, i'll go for the 1.8! give it a whirl, see how i get on!
