I have the normal 18-55mm lens that came with my d3100 i am looking at getting a longer lens and have seen the 55-200mm nikon, is this a good step?

i dont want to spend mega money because i'm still learning so i dont really want the 300mm lens :|

Any advice as to this lens? Is it good enough to photograph the moon and long range stuff?

thanks and sorry for the noob questions

the 55-200 VR is a great lens, especially for the price. Mine has moved from D40 to D90 and it still works great. It won't get you moon shots (you'll want 400mm or more for that) but it is a good focal length compliment to your 18-55. The VR is nice also.

thanks,
rick

200mm on a crop D3100 = 300mm

Wex has a pretty good visual guide to how different focal lengths compare.

Here is one grab from there:

Please take this as a relative guide, in the example case it's relative to 28mm ;)
