Why is it, when I spend more than the usual/general periods of time surfing TP I end up with GAS?

Not cured with Rennie or Gaviscon - only with regular Bank Account injections.... it's more pernicious than ebola!

My guess is that this happens because you find photographers showing images better than you can manage to produce, and you make the assumption that this is because they have better gear.

So, have you tested this assumption? Have you succumbed to the GAS and bought a better camera or lens etc? If so, then the fact that you still get GAS proves that you made the wrong upgrade. Or indeed upgrades, if you've done this more than once. We need more information about the history of this problem.

No cure, although a dose of new kit can help keep the symptoms under control.

TBH, I don't find the forum that much of a temptation unless the last post in the classifieds is something I might want. If that happens, I may well have a peek at that thread and it's a small step from there to the rest of the classifieds... We used to be able to collapse areas to make them easier to avoid but that feature seems to have vanished in recent times. "Oh, lord, deliver me unto temptation as I temptate against others!"

I was just looking at the stuff for sale and came across a Canon s95 that had just been sold, things went from bad to worse next it was an s100 I was looking at, then a 120, finally I ended up buying a Fujifilm X10, I didn't mean to do it.

X10,(y).

Post some pictures on the X10, X20, X30 thread.

Rhodese.

It's probably not the pictures, but if, like me, you enjoy using technical kit *in addition* to taking pictures then TP classifieds can sometimes cause problems.

I have no need for it, but would like something small that could be given to the wife on occasion & would take great pictures. Fuji, Olympus and the Canon EOS-M all appeal. :(

Not a "pictures are better than mine" issue... I reckon I had GAS before we knew what GAS was!

I think it's the engineer/technologist in me. Just amazed at what has been achieved over the decades I've been involved in Photography.

By the same token is it progress to get 'cleaner' less grainier photos by replacing a £££ dSLR with a new sensor for yet more £££, whereas before we just had to wait for Kodak, Ilford or Agfa to produce a new film/developer combination?

That sounds something similar to photographic Homeopathy :)

I suppose it is - but drip feeding kit actually contains some of the cure! In some ways, I suppose it's like a nasty chemical addiction - if you can afford the good stuff, you're unlikely to come to much harm but if you'll use any old junk, you'll have more of a problem!

I have found the need for a house extension and the purchase of a brand new vivaro is helping to numb the symptoms of GAS.

Who am I kidding, its really not. In fact it makes it worse because I can't afford a hit at the mo.

Ah... now there's the rub!

So... a 'hit' and Nod mentions 'addiction'. I think we have it folks .... photographic Narcotics! :arghh:

Some people need to apply the lust they have for new gear into a lust for better photography... their images would improve.

New gear does nothing unless it's something absolutely essential for the job in hand - flash gear for portraits, or a long lens for wildlife... fine.. I get that... but upgrading every time Nikon or Canon bring out a new camera is just stupid. They're tools.

I agree. But I would love to use Smartflashes instead of speedlights and a sigy 10-20 would be great for landscapes. But that doesn't mean I can't use what I have to practice. But it is nice to have gear and 'eliminate' it as a reason for a photo not coming out as you'd hoped. It doesn't always work though lol

But it always nice to upgrade your tools every now and then :D

It's not always about upgrades, sometimes it's a backwards or sideways step.
Good quality film cameras are very cheap nowadays and can be lusted after. :)
I have a soft spot for Contax cameras. The difficulty is the Zeiss lenses that go with them.
Russian lenses are good fun. Not the best quality, but fun nevertheless.

Everybody's different to an extent, and I've never been into the gearhead gadgetitis thing, but from time to time I spent more than I intended discovering what I actually needed.
:(

My problem is I just love cameras as well as photography. I can't be the only one that sits there while corrie is on messing and playing with lenses and cameras. How the blades look at different apertures, the effect focusing has on the elements, cleaning them to within an inch of their lives.........

It doesn't even matter what camera is it, I'll do the above with any camera, the quirkier the better!

If I'm not doing that I'm browsing the camera porn group on Flickr, or checking out the I offically have a new toy thread on here. Reading/watching YouTube reviews and looking through Flickr for camera and lens combinations that I will never even probably own but still really interested in. After all that you then hit the online shops and Ebay and then the reality kicks in that it's all far too expensive

At the moment their no known cure for GAS :D:arghh:

There is! It's not cheap, but it works...(or worked for me ;) :D ) Buy the most expensive, flag ship model you can (or save / remortgage haha) then buy it. Who knows, you might not even use it (guilty as charged on some occasions). Certainly stops you from wanting anything else... Then sell it later if you wish to get back your money and move on! When I think of the amount of time I have saved NOT reading any more reviews in lust, it probably was the best economic decision I could have made (if you account for the time I could then be working instead of reading countless reviews!). Perhaps difficult to do if funds are lacking but as a cure, it definitely worked for me. (Also works for guitars, phones, etc.!)

Recycled GAS?

What do you mean?

It made more sense to my stupid thinking the other day.... now it's not so clear. Must be the onset of GAS for me again. ;)

The problem with Cheng's solution is that isn't a cure. All it does is lower one's bank balance and gains a few months' respite from the GAS. Also, Top of the Range isn't always that aspirational - I would much rather put up with the slightly lower frame rate and lesser build quality of the D700 (or even an 810) over the D4(s) for reasons of lightness if nothing else. To that end, I have a small (physically and in terms of quantity of kit) Fuji system alongside the Nikons.

Another thing that can keep GAS at bay is to avoid looking at too many reviews - if you don't know about the Nicanujitaxny D35X(s) MkVIII, you don't want one! One way to come to terms with GAS is to accept that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT CAMERA! Even if there was such an animal, what would it be? My specs for it would almost certainly be different to Barry's, whose would be different from Cheng's etc.. No harm in hoping that a future body will contain a feature that you feel you need, it's only the continual chase after some possible features and succumbing to the marketing departments' blandishments when the "latest, greatest" new body/lens/flash is announced, only to find that the extra 1/2 frame per second is only available in MF mode with a 1.5x crop applied in bright sunlight and small, low quality JPEGs being saved! Be happy with what you have unless you really NEED the new features or your current kit is actually on its last legs

Mind you, new kit is nice!!! :D ;) :P

Strange it didn't work for you...clearly you've been too badly affected ;) :p I had the D3, sold it, and realised it was too damn heavy. Came to the same realisation about full frame. Feel like I'm not that bothered about it any more when I realised I've had the 'best' and it just wasn't for me! I feel sometimes price comes into it - anything expensive of course makes you feel good! But when you take price out of it and still realise the camera really isn't for you (and you've had your 'trial' period with it then go on to sell it) then really it made my GAS disappear.

When travelling, by far my favourite camera now is a m43s system and more commonly my iPhone! D700 firmly stays at home!

Also good point on the review front. I feel what massively helps is if you get out of the game for a while, come back 12 months + later, then everything that is now 'old' will be new to you and massively affordable and reduced in the classifieds :D

This year's flagship model is next year's last generation 2nd hand bargain so a GAS sufferer will still need a D5 if he/she has a D4. Even if GAS is well controlled, it can strike at any time - spot a bargain on a 2nd hand shelf and can't resist it? GAS! Read a review and succumb to the blandishments of a marketing department? GAS!

Is making a genuine upgrade actually GAS or just a natural progression? I'm not talking about a slight improvement over last year's model (say D7000 - D7100) but a significant improvement offering more usability and extra resolution (say D700 - D750). Hard to say, really - in my case, the D700 still does most of what I want it to do but the D750 does offer a lot of extra features which made it worth me buying one even knowing it has (allegedly!) a flare problem. I freely admit that the D800 I bought was almost pure GAS but would argue that the D750 was more of an upgrade in all ways while the D800 was almost just extra pixels.

Reading reviews is really only an indication of the presence of GAS and can be usefully used to hold the condition in check. A particularly valuable method of control is to find a skillful reviewer who regularly looks for minor problems or comparisons and turns them into reasons to downgrade and rubbish the kit you are interested in, Amazon can be a useful source of pure negativity although this can backfire when it's really stupid. The fact is that actual full blown GAS is only dangerous when you part with the money and the careful use of excessive research can delay the fatal move, lead you onto other stuff that extends the delay or even lead to complete boredom with the idea. However, sufferers should be particularly careful when looking at the for sale threads in Forums such as this where a good deal or a bargain from a trusted member can easily push you over the edge.
