Does anyone have any idea where I can source a long retractable ethernet cable ( about 10m )?

I've looked but the longest I can find is about 2.5m, I currently run a normal cable to the router when I need a wired connection, but its a pain ravelling and unravelling it each time I use it.

Does such a thing even exist? Or are there any other suggestions for something similar?

*EDIT* I should also add that it's currently not practical to have a permanent wire connected

Never heard of one that length before, you could always add a couple of couplers (allows you to plug cables together)?

I should probably say, I suspect this might not provide the best connection as each connection is a point of failure.

I think the longest retracgable ethernet cable I have seen was about 2.5m.

Other options

Powerline AV500 pair by the router (pass through type) with second close to where you want the other end, neat and tidy not a trip hazard.

TP-LINK TL-PA411KIT AV500 500 Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit - Twin Pack https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0084Y9N3O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WbvAxbSXYZ36V

OR

Flat Ethernet cable on a spindle youake up - More flexible than normal and ready fitted boots

Wow, I didn't know such a thing existed! Those are amazing.

So the connection runs through the house wiring? And no loss of speed? Thats crazy!
I wonder if there's any issues using them with a 4 plug bar, or do they need to be in a direct socket.

you could just get an old twin and earthe reel and buy say a 20m cable.
make a hole in the centre and poke one of the connectors through a few feet and then wind the rest on.

rj45 cable is not the best to be wound on and off reels tho as its cores will break quite easily.

If homeplugs is not a possibility, I would just make a reel myself; buy a empty reel, buy the length of Ethernet cable and crimp the connectors. Should be done in 10 minutes. Otherwise I can make you one for £250 including VAT :)

It should run clearly on a ring, depends on you consumer unit whether it can go across rings. Best results are on an unfiltered direct socket, although I've used them on a filtered extension block as well. However many do them with power socket passthrough so you don't really have to loose a socket.

When you see the headline speeds don't believe it ;) Half the speed immediately, but they can still be fast. Here is a picture of my home office and shows the craziness of varying speeds. Yet mine are on three different rings. The garage is noisy though :( But that is only a gateway to get out to the Internet so it is fine for me.

Heck it's worth a try! I mainly use a wired connection for gaming so as long as I keep a half decent ping I'll be happy enough.

For all the price of them it's worth a go. Any recommendations of which ones to go for? One's with a passthrough sound ideal as I've a distinct lack of free sockets in the house!

I've had several brands, in theory they are the same. However I've found the devolo most reliable. The dLAN 1200+ Wifi AC also provides a great additional Wifi Access Point, and the possibility of reaching Cat6 speeds. So pretty good. Not cheap though.

I have used the TP link pass through ones, they come with 2 years or might even be 3 years warranty.

The last set was purchased from Argos.

I use TP link but the AV 500 standard is used by many.

They can do brand mix and match but slower units (200Mb units will slow the AV500 to the lower speed apparently).

My grandson has the TP Link411 units and one supplies a very fast feed tor his. XBox One.

You can use them all over so it's possible to put one in every room. Some even have up to 4 ports.

The pass through type, as mentioned, retains your primary socket. Subject to loading I wouls suggest the 4 way be plugged into the Homeplug pass through socket. Keep the signsl as clean as possible. A 3Kw fan heater on the Homeplug is a no no.

They do work best on a ring main but I had one in my garden office on a radial circuit 30m from the main trip mcb and through a smaller distrution board feeding my garden office. Seemed quicker than the ones in the house!
