Hi all,

My camera is canon 450 and would like to try and find out how to get a longer exposure than 30 seconds, the next option after 30 seconds is bulb but dont no what its for or if I can use it to gain +30 seconds

Thanks for any advice you may be able to give.

Steve.

Bulb is basically where the shutter opens until you press the button again to close it, so you can have it open for as long as you want. Always best to use a wireless shutter release with it though as when you press the button to close the shutter you're likely to cause camera shake.

Actually that's not quite right. 'Test' is the mode where one click opens the shutter and remains open until you press the shutter button again. Bulb is where the shutter will remain open as long as the shutter release is held down. But it is indeed right that it's best to use some sort of remote release to reduce possible camera shake. You can also enable mirror lockup to help with this.

I used the bulb feature on a 15 minute exposure of the stars....
I did it using remote capture on the standard 450D software and a long USB cable outside to the camera.
I'm damned if I was sitting outside for that amount of time!
on the remote capture, it's a single click to start and a single click to stop
