Yes
Im off to London next month for the day and im wanting to hire a lens. I've been looking at either:
the 70-200 f2.8L IS USM
or the 28-300 f3.5-5.6L IS USM.

Now the 70-200 has a faster aperature but less versatility, and the opposite is true for the 28-300.

I have a couple of tamron lenses which dont seem to be that sharp? and a nifty 50 but i feel thats quite limited in what I can get in London.

I would appriciate your help on this, and also suggest other lenses if you think there is a better option!!

Thanks. Pete

I would have thought having a wide angle would be useful, maybe the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, or the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Walkabout territory....

Given the crop sensor I would go with the 15-85 or similar.... 17-50 f2.8 ?

Architecture etc.. ?

what do you think you will you be shooting?

I have just come back. I used a 24-105 on a FF camera. I had my 70-200 with me but wish i had not bothered..

All depends what you want to shoot though.

There is alot of threads at the moment showing shots from london last sat night..

im wanting to get a few shots, mainly attractions like nelsons collum, big ben, london bridge, and views from the Eye

Wide to short tele

The 15-85 gives good IQ and colour and is effective 24-136

I doubt you will need a long lens

I would an ultra wide angle lens and standard zoom lens are enough for that.
i.e. 17-40mm L with 24-105mm L

Leave the big bazooka sized things at home... just causes unwanted attention - from both sides of the law!

Short and stealthy - you'll probably want something wide'ish anyway unless you plan on going up the London Eye and shooting everything from there like a Japanese sniper :D

Okay, thanks for the replies!
Wide angle it is then! now im on a 1.6 crop so am i better going with the canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 or the 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS or something a little less wide like the 24-70/105??

One of the 18-55 kinda range constant f2.8 lenses would probably be best. There might be moments when one of the UWA's like a 10-20 might be better, but if taking just one lens, I'd go with the 18-55 type.

I love my 24-105F4, use it for everything, and is always in my kit bag. Had it on my 20d last year in london, only put the 70-200 on for getting closer to some things in London Zoo.

J''s right depends what your going to shoot, if you're going to Thames, the parks, Zoo etc. then you might well need the telephoto. Maybe the 18-200mm might be the better all purpose lens, unless you know you definately do not need the extra length, which reading you leading comment I doubt.

Can you definitely take only one lens? If so, then I would say the 15-85 would be the most useful. Ultra wide is great fun with architecture.

well, i could take as many lenses as i want, but i cant afford to hire all the ones i want! :( I can afford to hire one really, so was hoping to get the best all rounder. I'll have my 50mm and my (little bit soft) tamron 75-300 with me.

thanks for all your suggestions!

I am in London a fair amount and my main glass is the Tamron 17-50 and 85 1.8. Perfect on a crop for most shots. On that basis I would probably agree the 17-55 or 15-85 are good options. I'd personally go with the 17-55 as I tend to use the 85 for candids, other than that I don't need the reach.
