London School Trip To Houses of Parliament

Hi All,

In a little bit of a pickle at the moment.

Im going to london tomorrow with my law class on a trip to the houses of parliament. We will be spending the morning at the HOP and then spending the afternoon looking around and maybe visiting the British Museum.

I go to london a few times a year and i always take my camera because i love taking pictures of the street artist and architecture.

On this occasion though is it worth taking my camera, i will have lots of photo opportunities but what are the risks of me trying to take my camera into the houses of parliament (but keeping it in my bag at all times)?

Really stuck on what to do.

Are you doing the official tour? If you are, cameras shouldn't pose a problem as they have hundreds of tourists through every day.
If you're there as guests of a member, you'll be off the public route and photos will be a no-no. If in doubt, ask. And remember, the police there are all armed, so best to do as they ask ;)
 
Im going with my school so i'm assuming its an official tour.

But even if it is i do not intend to get my camera out while i'm in the building.

My camera is a full DSLR so will they mind me keeping it in my bag or will they insist on it being left somewhere secure?
 
I'd take it if I were you. At worst you'll be told to keep it in your bag. I think there are bits on the official tour where photography is allowed and bits where it is strictly forbidden.
Have you tried the Westminster estate website? They should have details on there.
 
I did the tour last summer and as mentioned you are only allowed to take photos in Westminster Hall the rest of the time its a no no. I took photos outside the entrance to Westminster Hall as well with no problems at all.
I'd recommend the tour it was very interesting to see it all in real life. It would be great if we could take photos inside though but I suppose there would be problems trying to keep the tour moving as there is just so much you would want to photograph.
 
Thanks all, decided im going to take my camera, they seem to be ok with camera's as long as they are used in the correct areas according to the website above.

Still trying to work out if they allow cameras in the British Museum, they don't seem to have much on the subject of photography and the use of cameras on there site.

If i have any problems i can always take a walk down to trafalgar square :-)

think they do, I was shooting in there last month and all i was asked was no tripod (it was strapped to the bag for some night time fun later)
 
How did you get on? Or are you currently residing in the tower of London? ;)
 
I took lots of photos in the British Museum last year without any problems. you will have great fun there.
 
I was in the British museum a couple of weeks ago and had no problem at all with my dslr - nor did anyone else who was using one. Generally there is no flash allowed and the lighting can be quite low so it can be tricky even with IS + high ISO. The hardest part was getting a clear shot as it was very busy especially around the mummies & Egyptian stuff.

If it's still there, go and see what they've got of the Staffordshire Hoard that was found just up the road from us (just the other side of Brownhills).
