Anyone else see the planned structure to stand alongside the London Olympic stadium called the Orbit?
Obviously it will be a good point of interest for the togs but I must admit, personally, it hasn't grown on me yet.
I'd have to be the first to call it "The Knot" as that what it appears to me as. I note that the engineers also contributed to the Gherkin and the Olympic "Birds Nest" Stadium in China too!

Linky to article.

 Cant see many concerts being held there after the Olympics has ended....

i like it.. but its going to look sooooo out of date in 10 years

10 years! :eek:I think it looks out of date now, as the article says "it looks like a mangled rollercoaster"
I would love to see some of the other submitted designs, surely there most be something more appealing than that.

Not that I know of, and I did double check the date it was posted and it was definitely pre-1st April...

I like it! Sounds and looks amazing to me. Pointless? Isn't all sculpture pointless to a degree? At least it looks like you will be able to go up this, unlike the angle of the north etc......and if you read the article it isn't all funded by tax payer money at all.

Then I love it ..... & it wouldn't be all that far from me

A comment on radio Scotland this morning made me laugh - Lakshmi Mittal to his shop floor manager, "I think I've found a way to get rid of all that surplus steel and get a tax break on it!"

It'll be good for a couple of shots when it is finished, other than that I guess it will be a good location for fireworks for the opening/closing ceremony, oh and an addition to the London Eye for New Years fireworks perhaps. Sounds good already...

Well I have some thoughts on it, but really I think we should hear from an expert.

These Olympics have to be good, they have to be special. We're not going to manage that if we always take the safe option.

My point was it's looks and purpose do not justify each other. Any structure needs to bring something beneficial. This things only purpose seems to be to give one a view over a fairly boring site anyway, and to house a cafe, so it's purpose is fairly crap. Then it also looks fairly crap, so it doesn't make up for it there either. Thus a waste of ~£19m.

Looks like an ideal climbing frame for those in need of a protest

Why the hell does stuff like this cost so much? The B of the bang in manchester cost somthing like £1.4 million and it fell apart, the estimated repair bill is £2-£3 million why does it cost twice as much to repair somthing? and if I ever quoted somone £200-£300 for a job they would ask me to be a little more specific but £1 million between estimates.

I agree completely. Even if its aesthetically disppleasing to some people's taste, it need to be, to be iconic or representative of the British Olympics. If the Chinese Birds Nest had been proposed in Britain there would, without doubt have been a similar negative reaction, to something which has now become a hugely iconic figurehead for the Chinese Olympics. I honestly think a lot of people would only be happy if they errected a giant middle finger, 100m high, facing towards Germany and France!
