Hi all

I am after a bit of advice on shooting the London Marathon this coming weekend.

I have a Nikon D80 and am wondering the best set up to shoot the event. I have previously shot running events and struggled to get auto focus using dynamic area mode, so have changed to centre spot focus. Is that the best??

Also should i be shooting P, A or S priority mode or one of the preset functions?

Thanks in advance.

Try these settings copied from my D200

Autofocus menu:
AF-C mode priority = FPS rate+AF
Focus are frame = normal 11 areas
Group Dynamic AF = Pattern 2 closest subject
Lock on = normal
Focus area = no wrap

From the shooting menu:
JPEG compression = size priority
White balance auto
Long exp noise reduction off (otherwise your camera buffer is very limited)

On camera body set AF-C on, then set the focus mode selector to the diamond then using the thumb wheel set the focus points to the upper middle so that you have an inverted T when using the camera in portrait mode. Set the sub dial to CH (continuous shooting high). Oh and centre weighted metering

On the day use between ISO400 and 800 (no matter what the conditions are). Set shutterspeed to a minimum of 1/400th's, use shutter priority mode.

If you haven't got a grip, then get one - shooting portrait for hours will kill your shoulders and arms without one. If you haven't got a monopod with a decent head on it, get one.

Shoot jpeg, try and get focus on the runners bibs or faces, and enjoy yourself.

And get there bloody early or else all the decent vantage points will be gone.

And take lots of crowd pics as well.

It's a great day - sadly I'll be missing it this year!

Yes getting there early would be good. Also try and get up somewhere high so you have a good vantage point. Also watch your background and shoot so that the runners have the sun in their faces as they come towards you

i would love to take pictures to, but i will be running it instead. i'm taking my gear with me though, to take pictures in and around london the day before.

Thanks for the information ross. I will go through those settings tonight and familiarise myself with them.

Good point about the sun, vantage points Etc also, thanks. Hope to get some good shots :):)
