Am visiting my sister-in-law in London this weekend and will be taking my camera with me for a days shooting while the girls catch up. With London being such a vast place I was wondering if anyone could give me a heads up on some locations I could visit.

Ill be looking mainly at landscapes and would like to try and find some 'alternative' locations rather than just buildings. Am hoping to do some long exposures by the river too.

Any help would be appreciated

If you mean central London then I can recommend a few places.

Covent Garden - lots of folks and entertainers.

Waterloo Bridge - IMO one of the best vantage points for views of the City.

Anywhere on the south side of the river between Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge - Tower Bridge, the Millennium Bridge, the Globe, Tate Modern, the Eye, entertainers, the Festival Hall and Houses of Parliament .

A possible route is going to Tower Hill underground, walk across Tower Bridge, walk along the south side of the river toward Westminster Bridge, up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, along the Strand and left into Southampton Street into Covent Garden. Total distance is about 4 miles.

If you do this you'll need some refreshment and a meal.

This place is a pub where people actually talk to each other and they serve excellent Guinness - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/21/2158/Coach_and_Horses/Covent_Garden

and here you will get a great meal for about a tenner - http://www.london-eating.co.uk/5562.htm

I was in London a couple of weeks ago and found some interesting spots between Tower Hill, across Tower Bridge and over the river. Enough just on a quick walk to suggest the area was worth a repeat visit.

Dave, excellent information mate and that sounds like a cracking walk. Fingers crossed for the weather and ill post up some images from the day. Planning to do that route Saturday, looking forward to it

My daily walk takes me on the south side between London bridge and the millennium bridge via clink street. In those few hundred yards there are lots of shots up for grabs, including the golden hinde, southwark cathedral etc.

Probably worth mentioning that the Notting Hill Riot/Carnival is on this weekend so there will be a few shots to be had there - Ill definitely be out and about for it :)

Hmmm, so im guessing London is going to be rammed this weekend!!:suspect:

Be careful at the Notting Hill Carnival with camera equipment. We are expecting trouble this year - more so than usual (last year was regarded as "quiet" and we still arrested almost 300 people) - and steaming gangs are very common, where large groups just start pushing through crowds and grabbing whatever they can get their hands on.

Just stay safe and alert :)

Well im hoping that due to the carnival it will take majority of 'people' away from places I want to shoot. Dont plan on going anywhere near Notting Hill really

Greenwich Park or Hampstead Heath give decent views or the old docks like the one next to the Excel with all the old cranes.

If the weather is nice try a boat trip up to Hampton Court and train back to Waterloo or down the river to the thames barrier

Another vote for the South bank from me, plenty to look at all along there. Hey TT, not been a good start for us has it? :gag::'(

How strange to think that I've probably walked past you on occasion as I do the same walk!

I love the City at the weekend, it's so peaceful and worth a walk round Leadenhall Market (although the shops are closed, it's quite a nice structure), the Lloyds building, the Swiss Re building (Gherkin).

You might like to check out the Heron Tower or Tower 42 to see if the sky bars are open and you can get some great pictures of the whole of London from there

Dave, took your advice and followed that route, excellent plan. Took in loads of sights and ended up at the Eye shooting all the street performers etc. Got back on the tube at Westminster.

Thanks again, have set up a thread in the landscapes section with some images from the day

Nice will look later. I love the south bank. I always get to London early for any appointment so I can walk it.

Glad you had a good time, Matt. Nice photos too, particularly the first and the Tower Bridge B&W.
