are these guys rip off merchants or something? i went in yesterday and was just LOOKING at some second hand lenses and bodys and i noticed there were two nikon d80 bodys only, both heavily used and both with a fair few scrapes on them and to my supprise they had each body up for £400 :eek: now i bought my d80 just after the d90 came out and when they stopped making it and i got a brand new one with warranty boxed and with the 18-55 vr kit lens (which is still in the box.lol) and i only paid £380 for it so how come they can sell the battered second hand ones for £400?

I noticed Grays Of Westminster have two D80 bodies, £415 and £425, but they are described as 'Mint-' (their descriptions are generally spot-on), and they offer a 12-month warranty on used gear. Bearing in mind that Grays isn't exactly the cheapest place to buy second hand Nikon gear, it sounds to me like LCE have over-priced them if they are a bit battered looking. A lot does depend on the desirability of a camera as to how much they can fetch on the used market.

i dont know what these are listed as but they have definitely been used well.lol not to sure on the warranty with lce either but it still seems a little over priced to me.

Most used dealers offer a 6-month warranty, however I have come across one or two in the past offering only 3 months, so I'd check with them if you were interested.

LCE was ok in my experience. We got my sisters A200 there (Colchester) for about 270 near Christmas 2008. Unfortunately by the time I'd got round to buying mine, they'd put it up to 300 so I bought one with a 4gb card and a Tamrac bag for 270 from Cardiff Camera Centre instead :D

no i wasnt interested in buying one i was just a bit shocked about the price of the d80's i didnt think they would still fetch as much as that.lol
the lce in derby are a bit funny, well there funny with me anyway must be the way i look (skin head, tattoos).lol thats why ive never bought anything from there i tend to take my custom just up the road to jacobs, there friendly as pie in there.

If they are still in the shop window then clearly they havent, anyone can ask any price for an item, however getting somone to pay it is quite another thing ;)

I got my GF1 from LCE, the one on the strand, they were really helpful and I got a reasonable price. I can also get the panasonic 3yr warranty because I bought it from there.

LCE prices can vary, i was looking on the website the other day and they had a couple of 100-400mm. Both listed as 4* but there was 300 quid difference on the price. I bought a mint 70-200mm f4 non IS from LCE last year for £400. Another store had an indentical one for £450.

It depends on how the manager grades the local market i suppose.

As far as my experience goes with LCE, there 2nd hand stuff is overpriced, but then, I'm sure they base there 2nd hand prices of retail price, which is generally more that most places. for example my local one has a 85mm f/1.2 mkII I think it was.... £1400 s/h, you could buy it new elsewhere for that, they sell it new for 1700+. Thats a saving if your buying in store I guess, but if you shopped around you could get better deals elsewhere.

very true.lol the lce in derby has never had anyone in it when ive been in obviously they must get custom but i never feel welcome in there and they just stare at you as soon as you walk in and act as if im going to steal something.lol
once i went in and took the lens i got with my d80 that was and still is in the box and has been out of the box once and never mounted on the camera (the lens being a 18-55 vr), now i know i wasnt going to get much for it but i just thought id take it in and ask them politely if they would buy it to maybe go with one of the bodys they have and the bloke looked at me as if i had walked into his family home and p****d all over his kids on xmas day, and just said yeah ill give you £20 for it and then just started laughing at me. i would have taken the £20 but i was disgusted at the poor customer relations i just muttered 't**T under my breath and walked off. now i know some of you on here think i was a bit stupid in taking the ''kit lens'' in but i just thought it would have been a nice thing for someone to buy a body and lens and for the lens to be in BRAND new condition. i even think that if they were nice to me and just said ''look mate we cant really take it because it wont sell, sorry about that'' i would have just given it to them for nothing as i have no use for it, but with me being so stubborn i still have the boxed lens in the spare room.lol
sorry for the long rant.

Gibbo..

I too find LCE overpriced, both new and second hand). also, I am not convinced their used gear is worth paying a premium for. Some of it looks like it has had a hard life yet they ask premium prices - they don't seem to have a grading system in place.

I would much prefer to source used kit from the classifieds here as it is much better value for money and often well looked after.

deffo with you on this one.lol:thumbs:

ah, I've only bought new, they did have a 2nd hand gf1 & 20mm but I was better off going for the new with the warranty (the 2nd unit would only have been £15 cheaper with a 1yr warranty)

Don't forget that new prices are up due to exchange rates, thus impacting on second hand prices too...

Yep camera equipment bought in the UK has been severely hit for 6 pricewise and its the same for the 2nd hand market. As for trade prices, I think LCE do take the Michael in what they offer to take goods off your hands, and other shops probably also do as well, I've only bought 1 used item, but was very please with the deal I got from Stuart at digital depot, so I would recommend them. Friends have had good experiences with ffordes, Mifsuds and Park Camera's, plus MBP, so there are bargains to be had, at least on the buying front.

Personally if I was to sell a lens or 2, I would stick with the TP forums.

Well i've just bought a lens from them for a good price, so will see if it's good enough....not expecting much as it was a 3 star grade, but still comes with 6 months warranty.

Due to the recession it is ridiculous what they offer when they buy things in.
A friend of mine bought a 300D off them for 169 but when another friend tried to give in his 350D as p/x for an 1DsII they offered him 75, so they probably buy the 300D's in for 50 (and sell them for more than 3 times that) ...

I don't understand how LCE are still open. Anyone who buys kit off them needs a talking to.

Their used equipment tends to be a bit pricey, but occasionally some of their new stuff is cheaper than the web. I bought a SB-600 from them a few years back, and it was cheaper from them than off the web.

And also, some people prefer to talk to someone who knows what their talking about, rather than buy from the web from a faceless person.

I tend to hunt around for ages when buying second hand equipment. LCE always seem pricey compared to many other second hand retailers.

I would agree. Also getting my local branches to respond to emails is impossible. I've sent a few enquiries by email and never had so much as a reply. Now I know I could have phoned but why should I bother? If they can't be bothered to reply to perfectly reasonable requests for information (in the last two cases it was asking them to confirm version no's of two second hand lenses they were listing) then I'm not sure I wan't to deal with them.

I've now stopped looking at the LCE web site. Their loss.

A big  for Mifsuds in Brixham though. Excellent shop with a good selection of second hand gear.

Well i must be a lucky one, as the lens was delivered today and is actually in better condition than i imagined!

I'd have said it looked as if it has been used, but not much.

Pricewise, i paid £50 less than they are going for on Ebay, so defo not overpriced.

called in LCE on the strand yesterday to get a P/X price on my sony kit,and they gave me £3200 for it,whereas cameraworld in wells street would only offer me £2,300 :cuckoo:,plus the D700 and lens was dearer in cameraworld[and both of them seen my kit,and how good condition it is in].

I contacted them via email to see if the Sony 11-18mm was in stock for immidiate delivery. Money in hand and wanting to buy buy buy!! 2 weeks later no reply at all.....
So I know where you guys are coming from :(

I've had a 70-200 F4L non-IS before and this close fairly close i'd say.

Can't say TOO much though, as i never had the F4 long, but first thing you notice is obviously build quality....much better with the F4 as you'd expect. It's over 3 times the price of this one though. ;)
