London based beginners course

Hi,

I'm new to DSLR photography (using a Nikon D3100) and have recently had the oppurtunity within a month of getting my new camera to take it on a trip to New York.

Whilst the shots I took were definitely of a better standard than I've been used to with a point and shoot I could see that there's space for me to up my game and use the camera better.

With this in mind I'm looking to go on a beginners course in London, I've done a few searches and it seems like there's plenty around but I was wodnering if there's any particular course that someone has been on or knows of that is particularly good for a novice like myself.

Just a note, ideally I'd be looking for something that focused mainly on the shooting and use of exposure, aperture and basic composition as opposed to a course that had a large photoshop/retouching element just because I haven't yet got the new computer I'd use for that kind of off-camera technical work.

Any tips let me know. Thanks.
 
Hate to jump in on your post but I'd like to know the answer to this too :)
 
Going digital do some very nice beginners courses as well as some based around holiday and landscape photography.
 
I did a one day course Photographing East London a couple of years ago at the Bishopsgate Institute. It runs every 3 months or so and is £70. No PP just shooting.
 
If you are a civil servant, it is possible that the local civil service sports club (CSSC) may run a course. London area ran two recently, that would have been idea for what you wanted. You did not have to be a CSSC member to attend, but would have cost slightly more. The guy who ran the course was a studio manager and knew his stuff.
 
I'd check out local photo clubs.

I'm in the middle of a Summer School at mine and it's good. The most important thing I've found though is that the members are pretty chilled out and helpful - no arrogance or patronising.

You can find out technique from videos from the Photo Mag websites but you will gain great knowledge from joining a club.
 
Phil, whereabouts is your camera club? I take it from your screen name your around Walthamstow area? I've been looking for a good club in the area for a while.
